THE POWER OF THE PACK: WHY WE NEED CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another…”
HEBREWS 10:24–25

We live in one of the most connected generations in history, yet many people are increasingly isolated. We can communicate with hundreds of people online, watch church services from our homes and follow preachers around the world, yet still have nobody who really knows us, walks with us or notices when we are struggling.

Technology can give us communication, but communication is not necessarily fellowship.

GOD SAVED YOU PERSONALLY, BUT HE NEVER INTENDED YOU TO FOLLOW HIM ALONE.

The Christian life is personal, but it was never designed to be lived in isolation. When God saved you, He did not only bring you into relationship with Himself; He also joined you to the Body of Christ and placed you within a spiritual family.

WHAT IS BIBLICAL FELLOWSHIP?

Acts 2:42 says:

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

The Greek word translated fellowship is koinonia. It speaks of sharing, participation, partnership and communion.

Within the context of the local church, biblical fellowship is believers sharing their life in Christ with one another through consistent relationship, worship, prayer, encouragement, service, accountability, care and mutual participation in the life of the Body.

Fellowship is therefore much more than shaking somebody’s hand after church or sharing a meal together.

SOCIALISING IS SHARING AN ACTIVITY; FELLOWSHIP IS SHARING A LIFE.

Why, then, does the believer need Christian fellowship?

1. FELLOWSHIP PROVIDES STRENGTH IN THE STORMS OF LIFE

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 says:

“Two are better than one… For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.”

Life has storms. There are seasons of disappointment, grief, financial pressure, sickness, family challenges and discouragement. Even strong believers sometimes become tired.

The blessing of fellowship is that when your strength is low, somebody else can stand with you.

Moses was a great leader, yet in Exodus 17 his hands became heavy. Aaron and Hur stood beside him and held up his hands until the battle was won.

THERE ARE BATTLES YOU WIN BECAUSE SOMEBODY HELPED YOU KEEP YOUR HANDS UP.

You need people who can pray with you, encourage you and remind you of God’s faithfulness when life becomes difficult.

2. FELLOWSHIP KEEPS YOUR SPIRITUAL FIRE BURNING

Think about burning coals. As long as the coals remain together, they generate heat and help keep one another burning. Remove one coal and place it by itself. It may remain hot for a while, but gradually its fire begins to diminish.

Nobody poured water on it. It simply became disconnected from the fire.

The same can happen spiritually.

When believers consistently withdraw from worship, prayer, the Word and relationships with other believers, spiritual coldness can develop gradually.

Hebrews 10:24–25 tells us to gather and to “stir up” one another.

Sometimes you come into the local church discouraged, but somebody’s worship stirs you. Somebody’s testimony strengthens your faith. Somebody’s prayer awakens your prayer life. Somebody’s hunger for God reminds you that there is more.

FIRE IGNITES FIRE. HUNGER PROVOKES HUNGER. FAITH STRENGTHENS FAITH.

3. FELLOWSHIP PROVOKES US TO LOVE AND GOOD WORKS

Hebrews 10:24 says:

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.”

The King James Version says:

“…to provoke unto love and to good works.”

There is such a thing as holy provocation.

When you fellowship with people who are serious about God, their lives can challenge you.

Somebody’s prayer life provokes you to pray.

Somebody’s generosity challenges you to give.

Somebody’s commitment challenges your inconsistency.

Somebody’s service challenges you to become involved.

Somebody’s hunger for God awakens hunger in you.

Godly fellowship should bring something good out of you.

SOME PEOPLE BRING OUT THE WORST IN YOU; GODLY FELLOWSHIP SHOULD HELP BRING OUT THE BEST IN YOU.

This is why the people around you matter.

4. FELLOWSHIP PROVIDES ACCOUNTABILITY AND CORRECTION

Hebrews 3:13 warns us about “the deceitfulness of sin.”

Sin can deceive us. If we remain isolated long enough, we can begin justifying attitudes and behaviours that somebody close to us would immediately recognise as dangerous.

Every believer has blind spots.

That is why Proverbs 27:17 says:

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

You need people who love you enough to encourage you, but you also need people who love you enough to correct you.

Sometimes you need somebody who can say:

“You are drifting.”

“Your attitude is changing.”

“You need to forgive.”

“You need to pray about this.”

“You are making a dangerous decision.”

“That is not consistent with the Word.”

Not everybody who corrects you is attacking you.

IF EVERYBODY AROUND YOU IS AFRAID TO CHALLENGE YOU, YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCOUNTABILITY; YOU HAVE AN AUDIENCE.

Healthy fellowship gives trustworthy believers permission to speak truth into our lives.

5. FELLOWSHIP PROVIDES SPIRITUAL PROTECTION

This is where the title THE POWER OF THE PACK becomes particularly important.

In nature, predators often take advantage of an animal that becomes separated from the group. Isolation can increase vulnerability.

First Peter 5:8 says:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Spiritually, prolonged isolation can become dangerous because nobody knows what you are facing.

Nobody knows you are discouraged.

Nobody knows your marriage is under pressure.

Nobody knows you are struggling with temptation.

Nobody knows you have become offended.

Nobody knows your prayer life is declining.

Nobody knows you are thinking about giving up.

Sometimes God’s protection comes through the people He has placed around you. A pastor notices something has changed. A brother calls you. A sister prays for you. A home cell leader notices your absence. Somebody sends you a Scripture at exactly the right moment.

Our ultimate security is in God, but God frequently expresses His care for us through His people.

ISOLATION CAN CREATE BATTLES THAT FELLOWSHIP COULD HAVE HELPED YOU FIGHT.

6. FELLOWSHIP HELPS US CARRY ONE ANOTHER’S BURDENS

Galatians 6:2 says:

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

There are burdens you must carry personally, but there are also burdens God never intended you to carry alone.

This is one of the beautiful benefits of belonging to a healthy local church.

When you are grieving, somebody stands with you.

When you are discouraged, somebody encourages you.

When you are sick, somebody prays for you.

When your family is facing a crisis, somebody walks with you.

When you experience a breakthrough, somebody celebrates with you.

Romans 12:15 says:

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”

Sometimes people do not need another sermon. They need somebody to sit beside them.

Sometimes fellowship simply says:

“I MAY NOT HAVE THE ANSWER, BUT YOU WILL NOT WALK THROUGH THIS ALONE.”

7. FELLOWSHIP CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT FOR MUTUAL MINISTRY AND SERVICE

First Peter 4:10 says:

“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

Notice the words:

“MINISTER IT TO ONE ANOTHER.”

God has placed something in you that somebody else needs.

And God has placed something in somebody else that you need.

This is why Ephesians 4:16 describes the Body as being joined together:

“…by what every joint supplies…”

EVERY JOINT SUPPLIES.

The local church was never intended to consist of a handful of gifted people ministering while everybody else watches.

You have something to supply.

Somebody needs your prayer.

Somebody needs your encouragement.

Somebody needs your testimony.

Somebody needs your wisdom.

Somebody needs your gift.

Somebody needs your generosity.

Somebody needs your experience.

Somebody needs your service.

Stop approaching church only asking:

“WHAT AM I GETTING?”

Begin asking:

“WHAT AM I SUPPLYING?”

You are not merely a consumer in the Body of Christ; you are a contributor.

8. FELLOWSHIP GIVES US A PLACE TO BELONG

Ephesians 2:19 says:

“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.”

The local church is more than an organisation you attend.

It is intended to become a spiritual family in which you are known, loved, discipled, challenged, encouraged and given an opportunity to contribute.

There is a difference between being in the crowd and being in the family.

You can attend a church every Sunday and remain completely isolated. You can sing with everybody, listen to the sermon and leave immediately without anybody knowing you.

That is attendance, but it is not necessarily fellowship.

Biblical fellowship moves us from attendance to belonging.

There should be people who notice when you are missing.

People who know when something is wrong.

People who celebrate your victories.

People who pray with you during your battles.

People you serve alongside.

People whose children know your children.

People with whom you are building the kingdom of God.

This is why Acts 2:42 says:

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship…”

They did not merely attend occasionally.

THEY CONTINUED STEADFASTLY.

True fellowship requires consistency.

Relationships require time.

Trust requires time.

Belonging requires participation.

You cannot build deep Christian fellowship through permanent distance.

THERE IS POWER IN THE PACK

Christianity is personal, but it was never designed to be lived alone.

The Bible calls us a Body, a flock, a household and living stones being built together.

Every picture communicates connection.

A hand disconnected from the body cannot function as it was designed to function.

A sheep separated from the flock becomes vulnerable.

A stone by itself cannot become a building.

And a believer who consistently isolates themselves misses many of the benefits God designed to flow through the fellowship of His people.

This is why Hebrews 10:25 says:

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”

Do not merely ask:

“DO I GO TO CHURCH?”

Ask:

“AM I IN FELLOWSHIP?”

Am I planted?

Am I connected?

Am I known?

Am I accountable?

Am I serving?

Am I encouraging somebody?

Am I allowing others to encourage me?

Am I carrying somebody’s burden?

Am I contributing what God has placed inside me?

WE WERE NEVER DESIGNED TO WALK ALONE.

We pray together.

We worship together.

We grow together.

We serve together.

We strengthen one another.

We sharpen one another.

We carry one another.

And when one falls, another reaches down and helps them get back up.

THAT IS THE POWER OF THE PACK.

THERE IS POWER IN BIBLICAL FELLOWSHIP.

What a beautiful and powerful Heritage Sunday we had! ❤️
We came together in our beautiful traditional attire, celebrating our heritage while worshipping and fellowshipping as one family in Christ.
We were also blessed by a powerful Word from our Apostle on “Heritage in the Kingdom”—teaching us what we should adopt and what we should not adopt as Kingdom people. 🔥
May the Word continue to guide us in how we live and walk as people of the Kingdom.
Be blessed! ❤️
