π BEACH SAFETY: CAN YOU SEE YOUR CHILD?
Your child says, βI'm fine!β β but can you actually see them? Or have they suddenly gone quiet in the water?
β οΈ Drowning isn't always loud or dramatic. There may be no shouting or splashing. A person in trouble may be unable to call out or signal for help. If something seems unusual, check immediately.
π NEVER ASSUME SOMEONE ELSE IS WATCHING.
At a busy beach, everyone may think another adult is supervising the children β but nobody actually is.
β
Assign a responsible adult to actively watch the children.
β
Clearly hand over supervision if you need a break.
β
Keep children in sight and stay close enough to respond.
β
Swim between the lifeguard flags and follow their instructions.
π Have a plan before entering the water. Agree on who is watching, where the children will swim and what to do if someone gets into trouble.
Enjoy the beach, but remember: being nearby is not the same as actively supervising. Silence doesn't always mean safety.
Share this reminder with your family and friends before your next beach visit. π

π BEACH SAFETY SERIES: YOU SEE SOMEONE BEING PULLED OUT TO SEA β WHAT DO YOU DO?
Imagine you're enjoying a day at Strand Beach when you notice someone struggling in the water, being pulled further out to sea.
Your first instinct may be to jump in and help. But please stop and think before entering the water yourself.
Rip currents are powerful, and even a strong swimmer can quickly become overwhelmed. An untrained rescue attempt can turn one emergency into two β putting both you and the person in danger.
π HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP SAFELY:
π 1. CALL FOR HELP.
Get emergency assistance as quickly as possible. Ask someone nearby to call while you take the next step.
π© 2. ALERT THE LIFEGUARDS.
If lifeguards are on duty, alert them immediately. They have the training and equipment to respond to water emergencies.
π 3. THROW FLOTATION.
If you have access to a suitable flotation device, throw it towards the person so they have something to hold on to while help arrives. Don't put yourself in danger trying to reach them.
β οΈ 4. DON'T BECOME THE SECOND VICTIM.
Do not enter the water for a rescue unless you're trained and have appropriate flotation equipment. Good intentions alone cannot make a dangerous rescue safe.
Remember: you can help save a life without jumping into the water. Call for help, alert lifeguards and get flotation to the person if you can do so safely.
Let's look out for one another this summer. Enjoy our beautiful Strand coastline, but always respect the ocean.

BEACH SAFETY: KNOW THE RISK. KNOW WHAT TO DO.
Strand is a beautiful place to enjoy the beach, especially as the weather warms up β but the ocean deserves our respect.
Rip currents can be difficult to spot, even for people who know the beach well. Here are four things every beachgoer should know:
π 1. THAT CALM PATCH MAY NOT BE SAFE.
A gap in breaking waves, darker water, or foam and debris moving out to sea may indicate a rip current. What looks calm isn't always safe.
π 2. CAUGHT IN A RIP? DON'T PANIC. FLOAT. SIGNAL FOR HELP.
Don't fight the current by swimming straight back towards the beach. Stay afloat, signal for help, and when able, swim parallel to the shoreline to get out of the current before using the waves to return.
β οΈ 3. NEVER FIGHT THE OCEAN.
Trying to swim directly against a strong current can quickly exhaust you. Conserve your energy and focus on staying afloat.
π 4. RIPS CAN MOVE.
The ocean is constantly changing. A spot that looked safe yesterday may not be safe today.
ποΈ Always swim at a lifeguarded beach and stay between the designated flags. Follow lifeguard instructions and never swim alone.
Share this with your family and friends before your next beach visit. Knowing what to look for β and what to do β can make a difference.
Enjoy our beautiful Strand coastline, but respect the ocean. Stay alert. Stay safe.

DON'T LET SOMEONE RUSH YOU
Pressure can make us overlook things, make mistakes or act before weβve had time to think.
Whether you're at an ATM, checking out at a shop, refuelling your vehicle or getting into your car, take your time.
π Pause before you act.
π Stay aware of what's happening around you.
π Don't skip safety steps just to keep someone else happy.
β If something doesn't feel right, stop and reassess.
Someone else's impatience is not your emergency.
You are allowed to take a moment. Your safety comes first.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF SOMEONE KEEPS TRYING TO ENGAGE YOU?
Sometimes a conversation starts innocently β but you may realise you don't want to continue it.
You don't owe a stranger a conversation.
β‘οΈ Keep moving.
π£οΈ Use a firm βNo, thank you.β
π₯ If they continue, move towards other people.
πͺ Head towards a staffed or busy location if you feel uncomfortable.
You don't need to explain yourself, argue or be rude.
A clear boundary is enough.
If someone ignores that boundary, prioritise distance and safety over politeness.

π§ WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THE ROAD AHEAD IS CLOSED?
You see other drivers turning off the main road and taking a different route.
Do you follow them?
π Donβt simply follow the crowd.
β‘οΈ Follow official diversion signs and directions.
πΊοΈ Avoid unfamiliar shortcuts just because other drivers are taking them.
π Stay alert β conditions around an incident can change quickly.
During an accident, protest, roadwork or emergency, the route other drivers are taking may not necessarily be the safest or officially approved route.
When the road is closed, donβt let impatience choose your route.
Follow the signs. Stay alert. Get there safely.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU SEE AN ACCIDENT?
Seeing a crash can make you want to stop immediately and help β but your safety comes first.
If you come across an accident:
β οΈ Donβt become so focused on the accident that you put yourself at risk.
π Stop only where it is safe and legal to do so.
π Contact emergency services if assistance is needed.
π Stay alert for approaching traffic and secondary collisions.
A crash scene can be unpredictable. Vehicles may still be moving, debris can be on the road, and other drivers may not see the accident in time.
You can help without becoming part of the emergency.
Slow down. Stay alert. Keep yourself safe.
