Join us next week Thursday at 17:30 for the official opening of ‘in resonance’ - a group exhibition and open studio by Ulriche Jantjes, Vincent Engelbrecht, Kabous Hanslam and Ron Sauerman.

This exhibition’s open studio format transforms the gallery into a shared, active workspace where the artists pull back the curtain on their creative processes. Moving beyond finished, static displays, this dynamic format invites visitors into an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the daily rhythms and material experiments that shape their art-making.

“What are the possibilities for a medium at a crossroads in a time of great instability?”

This is a central question at the heart of ‘Alchemical (Im)possibilities’ posed by its curators Jean Brundrit and Svea Josephy.

‘Alchemical (Im)possibilities’ is a group exhibition that brings together works of photographers based in the Western Cape who are “extending photography’s pasts and futures” through their exploration of both new and old technologies. By foregrounding the process and materiality of the photograph, these artists consider how the present has been shaped not only by its histories but by its futures as well.

Open for public viewing on Thursday, 17 September with the opening reception on Saturday, 19 September at 11H00.

Feature Friday | Vincent Engelbrecht 🦉

While ‘Curiouser Curiouser Curiouser’ is still on show and will be up for a bit longer, we’re taking a moment to sit with the work of one of its artists, Vincent Engelbrecht.

“Things begin with drawings for me, I plan, think and dream through drawings. It has become the foundation of where I work from regarding this body of work.

I also draw from themes of magical realism, embodied knowledge, lived experiences, daydreams and nightmares to inject life into my work.

The prints, drawings and objects in this space are a culmination of everything that I have worked towards in the effort to create a world/narrative. This world has recurring objects and characters which become things of their own.”

Make sure to come and view the exhibition before it closes next week Wednesday, 12 August.

‘Curiouser, Curiouser, Curiouser’ - the third group exhibition in our masters mid-year review season - features works in progress by Nkhuwemi Kumwenda, Vincent Engelbrecht and Luke Rudman.

This exhibition is open to the public from Thursday, 6 August through Wednesday, 12 August.

‘Remains’, the second exhibition in our postgraduate lineup, showcases work by Enrike Groenewald and Rebekah Pringle.

This exhibition focuses on the process and products of a creative discourse with collections of remains. Enrike’s work explores concepts of mourning and commemoration through contemporary jewellery made using the bodies of insects, intentionally blurring the boundaries between notions of preciousness and repulsion. Rebekah’s work uses everyday materials such as wooden furniture and cement to unpack the interdependent relationship she has with her grandmother, resulting in a body of work that evidences lived experience, putting memory into form.

‘Remains’ will be open for public viewing tomorrow until Friday, 31 July.
