OPINION | From our CEO, Andrew Ross

One of my top three events, ever!

Not a statement I make lightly. I’ve organised opening ceremonies for World Cups, worked with Schwarzenegger and Oprah, run Cricket Stadiums in Sri Lanka, and toured trophies around Africa.

But, once in a while, a project comes along that makes you realise that what we do actually can make a difference.

When my old friend Altaaf Kazi from the Millat Group first called me about launching the inaugural Skift hashtag report focused on the opportunities of tourism in Africa, I was naturally honoured to be involved.

Then he broke the news.
We’re doing it on top of Table Mountain!

Naturally, I said No! (My actual phrasing may have been slightly more colourful)
Several times.
Forcefully.
With intent.

He didn’t listen.

But slowly, piece by piece, my Chaos Theory team and I started to flesh out what an immersive event experience, highlighting the culture, food, people, experiences and most importantly, the opportunity of Africa would look like, and why the Mountain mattered.

And suddenly it made absolute sense.
So we agreed to take on the task.

Over a few weeks, we developed the core concept and built numerous experiences with over 20 touchpoints. Then, with a phenomenal crew and cast of over 150 talented team members… as they say in the classics, we made s**t happen.

The entire experience, from check in at the Hyatt, open top bus trips to the base of the mountain, scripted ambassadors showcasing the personality of our nation, buskers, minstrels, choirs, VR experiences looking out over the city bowl, sunrise yoga sessions, Michelin Star level food experiences from the amazing Hyatt Regency Cape Town, Pret-A-Manger Matcha stations, a multi-camera live stream, and the star of the show…a 150 person conference set-up presentation were all designed to provide a snapshot of the personality of Africa as an investment destination.

And it did that, and so much more.
It all pulled together and landed.
Resoundingly.

Moving parts. Numerous.
Scenario Plans for Weather. Several.
Things that could go wrong. Tonnes.
Nerves of steel. Shot.

But the client, stakeholders and our teams pulled it off.
Phew.

And this is not a post bragging about how clever we are. This was an absolutely integrated effort by all parties to pull this off, everyone literally on the same page, every decision made with the best interest of the project first, and egos second.

And I am fully aware of just how rare that is these days.

So.
This is a love letter to brave clients.
It’s a testimony to the power of trust.
It’s a shout-out to always finding a way.
And most importantly, it’s proof that when you truly collaborate with clients, the seemingly impossible can be done.

Looking back, one of my favourite sayings is a fitting end to a remarkable journey.

“Don’t be afraid to fail. Be Terrified Not To Try!”

Chaos Theory recently had the opportunity to bring the BFGoodrich brand to life at the Red Bull Flugtag at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Our brief was to drive lead generation, brand presence, and celebrate BFGoodrich’s heritage, and we did just that.

We created a bold and interactive stand experience featuring:
- A series of digital content pieces across three LED pillars, including a BFGoodrich heritage timeline and KO3 product videos
- A fun, shareable Faceswap activation, where visitors could step into the role of a 4x4 adventurer or rally driver, complete with personalised photos and videos to share online
- A competition giving one lucky participant the chance to win an Adventure Getaway

The result was a high-energy, fully branded experience that captured attention, generated leads, and showcased the adventurous spirit of BFGoodrich.

NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON'T | PREMIERE 25/11/2025

What a night. On Wednesday, 12 November, the red carpet was out at Movies@Monte and the V&A Waterfront for the premiere of ‘Now You See Me Now You Don’t 3’. The cameras, the guests and the atmosphere all came together to make it a premiere worth remembering.

Chaos Theory was behind the experience, from the talent to the production to the details that pulled it all together. A solid team effort that landed exactly the way it needed to.

Thanks to our crew, our partners and everyone who joined us on the night.

NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON'T | PREMIERE We hosted a few of our faves for an incredible night of magic, mystery, and wonder at MonteCasino. Remember to see NOW YOU SEE: NOW YOU DON'T in cinemas NOW!

Three days. That’s how long it took to lose, and then regain, one of our favourite clients.

In this honest and slightly hilarious reflection, our CEO, Andrew Ross shares what it feels like to run an agency in today’s world: where procurement processes, silence, and “oops” emails can shake even the steadiest nerves.

But also: where resilience, perspective, and a bit of restraint (shoutout to unsent drafts) make all the difference.

We lost a great client last week!!! But only for 3 days!

If you can imagine the most extreme sport in the world, I guarantee you running your own agency puts them all to shame.

You see, as part of a standard due diligence process, one of our favourite Chaos Theory clients asked all agencies on their books, globally, to resubmit credentials and rate cards.

We did, and heard nothing. To quote Tom Jones, "It's Not Unusual".

We just carried on, assuming the best as you do!

Until last week, when we received in the middle of the night, the formulaic corporate response every agency has seen, and we all dread!

Basically, our services would no longer be needed. Thanks for everything, oh, and please turn
the lights off on the way out.
I was, to put it mildly, a little taken aback.

Had we done anything wrong?
Was it my hair?
We THOUGHT the work we were delivering was great; they disagreed—obviously!

I had drafted about three replies to my actual clients—not the generic procurement catch-all mailbox. One was obviously "dazed and confused", one a little more assertive, and one frankly
mostly in BOLD UPPERCASE.
In hindsight, thankfully, due to a few big pitches, I hadn't sent them.
Younger me would have bashed them all off within an hour of each other.

Then, three days later, we received the following email.
"Apologies, we sent you the incorrect mail!
We are actually super happy to continue.
Please send us a copy of your current MSA when you can."
Soz.
I paraphrased the last bit.

Three days!
The amount of retrospective contemplation one can achieve in three days is staggering, for
those who are interested.
I may or may not have had a few moments in the shower, considering life, the universe and
everything.

Anyway, we have one of our favourite clients back, after a 3-day hiatus.

And we are wiser for realising well, we are all vulnerable to the whims of corporate shifts and
need to remember sometimes s**t, as they say, happens.

You need nerves of steel to run an agency. Let no one tell you otherwise.

I'm off to SkyDive to celebrate.
I won't even be scared!
