It’s not every day that you get to see a hippo this close, especially out of the water! 🦛

Regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous mammals, the hippopotamus is an extraordinary combination of sheer size, immense power and surprising speed. It’s easy to underestimate just how formidable these animals are until you encounter one standing on dry land.

We’re so accustomed to seeing little more than their eyes, ears and nostrils peeking above the water that witnessing one in its entirety offers a completely different perspective.

Sometimes, the best sightings begin with almost nothing at all. 🐆

During an afternoon safari, another vehicle called in a leopard. She was lying barely ten metres from the road, almost completely hidden in the bush. Visibility was poor, but we were close, so we decided to take a chance ... and wait.

Then a bachelor herd of impala wandered past.

They spotted her, alarm calls rang through the bush, and in an instant the resting leopard became a hunter. She exploded from cover in pursuit, but the impala escaped.

To our surprise, she returned and settled just a few metres from our vehicle. By then, everyone else had moved off in search of lions, leaving us completely alone with her for almost an hour.

Eventually she rose, made one more unsuccessful attempt at the impala, and melted back into the vegetation.

But the biggest surprise was still to come.

It was Serati, whose name means “lover” a female we don’t see very often. And as I watched her closely, I suddenly realised something... She’s pregnant. 🐆

We may never see her cubs. Female leopards become incredibly secretive when raising young, and much of that story may unfold unseen somewhere in the Pilanesberg wilderness.
But that’s part of the magic of the bush, countless stories are unfolding around us, whether we’re there to witness them or not.

Ever wondered why the lilac-breasted roller is called a troupant in native South African Afrikaans? 💙

The answer appears to lie in the old Afrikaans word troupand, meaning a pledge or token of marriage. Over time, troupand became troupant as the name for this spectacularly colourful bird.

But this is where history begins to mingle with folklore.

One story tells of Voortrekker women decorating their wedding attire with the roller’s brilliant feathers. Another, often repeated around the bush, tells of a young man presenting a blue roller feather to the woman he wished to marry. In one version, the feather was wrapped around her finger, staining it blue and becoming a symbolic troupand, a pledge of marriage.

Whether these traditions really gave the bird its name, or whether the stories grew around a name that already existed, is much harder to establish.

And perhaps that mystery is part of its charm.

Perched conspicuously above the African bushveld in an extraordinary display of lilac, turquoise and blue, the troupant is a familiar sight. Yet behind its familiar Afrikaans name lies a wonderful mixture of language, history and folklore.
