We are proud to announce Turning Towards the Sun, a new exhibition presented by Zeitz MOCAA, the African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC) and BMW, opening on 11 December 2026 in Cape Town.
Inspired by the ideals of Pan-African solidarity and the power of collective imagination, the exhibition brings together six artists and filmmakers from Africa and its diaspora to explore the possibilities of cinema, storytelling and artistic exchange.
Featuring works by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, Mati Diop, Jim Chuchu, Wanuri Kahiu, Robin Coste Lewis and The Otolith Group, Turning Towards the Sun invites us to consider how moving images can connect histories, challenge perspectives and imagine new futures.
The exhibition forms part of a wider journey of artistic collaboration initiated by Julie Mehretu, Mehret Mandefro and the late Koyo Kouoh through AFMAC, with BMWโ€™s 20th Art Car by Julie Mehretu also on display at Zeitz MOCAA for the duration of the exhibition.
Curated by Khanyi Mawhayi, with support from Dr Phokeng Setai and Dr Greer Valley, this collaboration celebrates the creative knowledge, connections and possibilities emerging from the African continent and its diaspora.
On view: 11 December 2026 โ€“ 15 August 2027
Location: Level 4, Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town

What happens when we do, see and experience something again?

Zeitz MOCAA presents Re-enactments, a one-day symposium held on the occasion of Cauleen Smithโ€™s major survey exhibition, Afflict the Comfortable, Comfort the Afflicted.

Drawing from Smithโ€™s films and research-based practice, the symposium brings together artists, thinkers and cultural practitioners to explore re-enactment as a way of producing knowledge, revisiting histories and imagining new possibilities.

The day also extends the conversations within the accompanying Afflict the Comfortable, Comfort the Afflicted publication โ€” a richly illustrated monograph bringing together voices from across the continent and diaspora to engage Smithโ€™s explorations of Pan-African traditions and futures, Black cinema, Black feminism, Afrocentric aesthetics and science fiction.

Saturday, 10 October 2026 | 2 PM โ€“ 8:30 PM

Heritage Day tasted and felt a little like this ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

From food and art to culture and community, it was a celebration of the many stories, flavours and creative expressions that make South Africa so special.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, to the Makers Landing food ecosystem vendors who brought the flavour with special pop-ups and food trucks, and to the Zeitz MOCAA team for opening the museum doors for a day of art, discovery and connection.

And to our sponsors who helped make the day possible: Bloomberg Connects , Radisson RED Cape Town , The Cape Wheel and V&A Waterfront โ€” thank you for being part of the celebration.

Hereโ€™s to more moments around the table, through art and food, and across our shared spaces ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ–ค

Introducing (B)andWi(d)th, the first artists-in-residence at IMPRINT, Zeitz MOCAAโ€™s Publishing Atelier.

Formed by artists Kim M Reynolds and Luyanda Zindela, (B)andWi(d)th is a publishing collective whose practice brings together poetry, literature, food, visual language and shared histories to explore how we make meaning.

For their residency, the duo presents First-Time, a project that looks at the knowledge we gain through experiencing something for the first time โ€” from leaving home and falling in love to loss, belonging and the moments that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Through personal and collective memory, the project invites us to consider the connections between our own stories and the archive.

Meet (B)andWi(d)th and discover the first chapter at IMPRINT on view from 2 October 2026.

โ€œIntroducing IMPRINT, the latest iteration of the Koyo Kouoh Atelier at Zeitz MOCAA.

Opening 2 October 2026, IMPRINT brings three Cape Town-based publishing collectives; (B)andWi(d)th, Medupi Publishing and Creative Knowledge Resources, into the Museum as residents, transforming the Atelier into a space for production, experimentation and exchange.

Co-curated by Nathalie Viruly and Dr Greer Valley, IMPRINT explores publishing as both trace and action: the mark an idea leaves behind and the ways knowledge can move through books, sound, radio, posters, objects, ephemera and forms yet to be defined.

Structured through six-month residency iterations, the collectives will bring their own research, methods and material practices into the space, alongside reading groups, debates, discussions, xeroxed readers and The Daily โ€” a collaborative curatorial project shaped by contributions from the residents, curatorial team, fellows and the public.

By centring independent publishing and multiple voices, IMPRINT asks what becomes possible when forms often considered supplementary or peripheral are brought to the centre of the Museum.
