Our hearts are completely shattered.

We had so much hope for our "Amazing 8" puppies and our two resilient Mange Brothers. We poured endless love, sleepless nights, and tireless effort into nursing them back to health and getting them ready for forever homes. Tragically, despite our strict protocols, Parvovirus struck our shelter without warning.

Within a matter of days—despite 7 of the puppies having already received two vaccinations—we lost 7 of the Amazing 8, as well as both of our sweet Mange Brothers. Out of all 10, only one single puppy survived to go to a forever home.

To say our staff and volunteers are devastated is an understatement. When you pour your heart into saving lives, losing them to a relentless disease makes you feel defeated. But we believe in being fully honest with the community that supports us so fiercely.

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒 & 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐖𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏

Parvovirus is a silent, devastating, and extremely stubborn virus. It spreads like wildfire on clothing, shoes, and unwashed hands.

Puppies need fresh air and time outside of their kennels to grow and play, and ironically, our front puppy playpen was designed as their safest space. We posted signs asking the public not to touch the puppies, but we know how tempting it is. An innocent touch without disinfected hands—even with good intentions—can carry a fatal virus directly to a vulnerable pup. We suspect this is how the virus entered our space.

𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥:

‼️PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY ANIMALS AT THE SPCA WITHOUT EXPLICIT STAFF PERMISSION.‼️

We are not putting rules in place to be difficult or unkind. We are doing it to save lives.

Respect all signage and boundaries throughout the shelter premises.

Refrain from reaching into pens or enclosures, no matter how adorable or friendly the animal seems.

Sanitize your hands before and after visiting any part of our facility.

To everyone who supported, rooted for, and loved the Amazing 8 and our Mange Brothers from afar: we are so deeply sorry we couldn't bring them all to the finish line. We thank you for standing by us during our hardest days.

​Today was deep-clean day at the Brakpan SPCA. When you have dozens of rescue animals depending on you, a quick sweep just isn’t enough.

​Every single dog was safely moved out so every kennel, bed, pallet, bowl, and corner could be scrubbed, disinfected, and restored. It is exhausting, physically demanding work in the heat—the kind of behind-the-scenes effort that rarely makes it onto camera. But today, we took a moment to capture the people who make it all happen.

🚨 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘? (𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀) 🐾

Two helpless puppies were recently left in our after-hours kennels at Brakpan SPCA. Both are suffering from an advanced, severe form of mange. Seeing them in this condition breaks our hearts—especially because mange is 100% treatable and preventable.

We immediately stepped in to begin their emergency treatment regime:
✅ Administered NexGard Spectra to tackle parasites

✅ Washed them with therapeutic Medicated Shampoo to soothe their raw skin

✅ Treated them with an Ectodex dip to kill off the infestation

We are sharing their story to educate our community and ask for your help. It never has to get to this point.

❓ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲?
Mange is a skin disease caused by tiny microscopic mites living on or under an animal’s skin. It causes intense irritation, raw sores, and severe hair loss.

🦠 The 2 Types of Mange:
1️⃣ Sarcoptic Mange ("Scabies")
⚡ Extremely Contagious: Spreads rapidly between animals (and can briefly cause itchy spots on humans!).
😖 Key Sign: Relentless, extreme itching. Animals scratch non-stop until their skin bleeds and turns crusty.

2️⃣ Demodectic Mange ("Red Mange")
🛑 NOT Contagious: Caused by mites that naturally live on dogs. It only flares up when an animal's immune system is weak, malnourished, or under severe stress.
👁️ Key Sign: Hair loss starting around the eyes, face, and paws, leading to raw, red, swollen skin.

🚨 Early Warning Signs to Watch For:
Thinning fur or patches of baldness

Thickened, scabby, or dark skin

Constant scratching, biting, or rubbing against furniture

Red, inflamed, or foul-smelling skin

💡 Treatment is Safe & Simple!
Please never use home remedies like motor oil or bleach—these are toxic and cause immense pain on raw skin. Modern vet care offers quick, safe options to cure mange early!

We are beyond excited to share the final numbers from our September Sterilisation Drive!
Thanks to your incredible support, we successfully sterilised 79 animals in total! That is 79 fewer breeding animals in our community, making a massive dent in the cycle of unwanted litters and overcrowded shelters. 🐶🐱✨

Just when we feel like we are winning, hope begins to fade.

Every month is a financial struggle, and we barely make ends meet. This leaves zero buffer for big ideas—or for when things go wrong. Right now, things have gone very wrong.

‼️ Our trusty Ford Figo (driven by our inspectors) has stopped starting. This leaves us with only one operational vehicle—our trusty Bantam—to handle everything. When the Bantam is out on a call, our team cannot attend to other urgent matters, emergencies, or cruelty investigations.

This is creating immense stress for our team as we try to prioritize urgent calls. Sadly, we've also faced public hostility from people demanding we collect unwanted animals—even when there is a working car sitting in their driveway and no offer of a small fuel donation. We know this isn't the case for everyone, but we are pleading for a little empathy and understanding.

Ford Figo (1.4 TDCi): Non-runner. Because it won't start, we cannot tow it. We need a mechanic or knowledgeable technician to come inspect it on-site.

Nissan 1400: Cuts out while driving. It is currently parked for safety reasons so staff aren't stranded during an emergency. We also need a new Battery for this vehicle. We have had offers to help, but none have come through for us!

Because of you, we have officially ended the cycle of unwanted litters for roughly 70 animals so far! That is 70 fewer pets contributing to overcrowded pounds and shelters—a massive step forward in tackling pet overpopulation in Brakpan. 🐶🐱✨
