Sandstone Estates - Pty Ltd
Sandstone Estates . Internationally recognised Railway, Agricultural and Military preservation centre.
Sandstone Estates is an extensive farming complex located in Free State, South Africa, close to Bloemfontein. Owned by local and international shareholders, they are also a global-scale hub of transport preservation.
Long before Sandstone had steam trains or military vehicles, rescued tractors were the start of it all 🚜
From vintage workhorses that broke ground on the first mechanised farms, to beautifully restored icons, Sandstone is home to an impressive collection of tractors that helped shape farming history.
They might not be winning any drag races, but they’ve certainly got horsepower and plenty of character! 💪🚜

Sandstone was privileged to sponsor a team comprising Bianca van Rooyen and Edward Mothijoa in the recent National event at Parys from September 28th to October 2nd. Bianca rode La Campanella with Edward on Princess Amore. Unfortunately, the very poor and wet weather disrupted the event quite badly and results are still pending, nevertheless our congratulations to Bianca and Edward for their efforts in competing as the Sandstone Team.
Some people like a steamy attraction, we prefer steamy traction…💨🔥😅
From mighty traction engines to steamrollers built to tame the roads, these incredible machines are a reminder of an era when steam didn’t just run the railways, it worked the land and ruled the roads too 🚜
Another fascinating piece of working history at Sandstone Estates 🌾
Planes, trains, and automobiles ✈️🚂🚜

We love aircraft , but don’t get on our bad side…💥
The QF 3.7-inch Anti-Aircraft Gun was Britain and the Commonwealth’s primary heavy anti-aircraft weapon during WWII, capable of engaging aircraft at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet.
Around 10,000 were built, with these formidable guns seeing service across the world, including with South African Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiments.
Sandstone’s example has recently undergone a cosmetic restoration, finished in the correct Olive Drab used by the South African Defence Force from 1961 to 1975.
Another piece of military history preserved at Sandstone Estates.

Nearly a century ago, this locomotive was helping change the way South Africa’s sugar industry moved 🌾
Built in 1930 for Ellingham Estates, the Avonside No. 2046 was one of the earliest diesel locomotives in South Africa, and the first of its kind in the country’s sugar cane industry.
Almost 100 years later, this unique locomotive is part of the Sandstone collection and its next chapter is beginning.
Now in Johannesburg for restoration, work is underway towards returning the Ellingham Diesel to running order once again.

We just love our sunsets at Sandstone, particularly looking at Soutkop mountain near Sekonyela. Mark Ruddy sent us two pictures while Christo Kritzinger, from Sandstone, captured the nearby dam as well at sunset.
