Have you ever stopped to wonder where the hymn "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" came from?
πΌ For many of us, it's a familiar hymn. We've sung the words countless times. But behind them lies the true story of a family whose faith cost them everything π
In the 19th century, a man named Nokseng, along with his wife and two children, became followers of Jesus after hearing the Gospel from an American Baptist missionary in the remote hills of Assam, India.
When the village chief demanded that Nokseng renounce his faith, he refused. His answer was simple:
π"I have decided to follow Jesus."
The chief ordered his two sons to be executed.
As they lay dying, Nokseng was given another opportunity to deny Christ. Instead, he declared:
π"Though none go with me, still I will follow."
His wife was then put to death.
Moments later, as Nokseng faced ex*****on himself, his final words were:
π"The cross before me, the world behind me."
Those weren't lyrics written for a song. πΆ They were the final declarations of a man whose love for Jesus outweighed everything this world could take from him.
Witnesses were so moved by the courage and unwavering faith of this family that the village chief and many throughout the surrounding community turned to Christ β Years later, those three declarations became one of the most beloved hymns ever written.
The next time you sing "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus," don't let the words pass by casually. Remember the faith behind them.
It leaves us with a question worth asking ourselves:
Have I truly decided to follow Jesus whatever the cost?
