Protecting the environment on land and in the ocean has been a major focus of discussions at the National Conservation Area and Biodiversity Symposium this week.

Vanuatu Weightlifting has secured a direct qualification spot for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, marking a historic achievement for the sport in Vanuatu.
It is the first time Vanuatu Weightlifting has earned a direct pathway to the Commonwealth Games, with the competition set to begin in July this year.
Thomas Wilbur and Ajah Pritchard Lolo will represent Vanuatu on the international stage, competing against some of the world's best weightlifters.
Speaking to VBTC Sports, Thomas said he was extremely happy to earn his first-ever Commonwealth Games appearance and is looking forward to representing Vanuatu at the prestigious event.
The face of the Efate Ring Road continues to change as upgrade works progress, even though the project's completion deadline has already passed.
This week, tar-sealing works moved through some of the worst sections of the road, bringing relief and smiles to residents and road users from North and West Efate who rely on the route every day.

The government has withdrawn or repealed item 1 in the 10th Amendment of the constitution bill.
The item 1 provides for an additional right of the people of the republic of Vanuatu regarding the right to have a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
The Prime Minister, Jotham Napat stated that the government through the Council of Minister has decided that it would need further review and interpretation.
Napat said if passed now it may have potential retaliation on the government.
A new youth employment initiative in Port Vila is helping young people build confidence, gain life skills, and prepare for the workforce.
The Fresh Starts Project targets school leavers and unemployed youth, providing practical training and guidance to help them take their next step toward employment or entrepreneurship.

❗️Parliament has approved and passed the Bill of the 10th amendment of the constitution act no of 2026.
The Bill has gained 39 votes in favor and 5 abstained in its second reading.

First reading of the 10th amendment of the constitution — the motion has passed with 40 votes in favor and 6 abstain.
Now in committee stage.

Improving access to affordable banking and financial services has been a key focus of discussions at the Pacific Islands Regional Initiative (PIRI) meeting currently underway in Luganville.
The meeting has brought together Governors of central and reserve banks from across the Pacific to discuss ways of building a more inclusive and resilient financial system for the region.

The Opposition will abstain on the principle of the 10th Amendment of the constitution bill which amends the Public service act of the Public Service Commission.
Opposition leader Ishmael Kalsakau stated that the reason behind why they will abstain Is because they must be careful on the real intentions of these amendments before they agree on it.
The Prime Minister Jotham Napat presented this Bill this morning.

Russia has reaffirmed the importance of its relationship with Vanuatu, saying there are no “big” or “small” countries when it comes to international cooperation.
Speaking at the State House yesterday while presenting his credentials to President Nikenike Vurobaravu, Russian Ambassador-Designate H.E. Mikhail Petrakov said Vanuatu's voice is just as valuable as any other nation in the United Nations.
The visit also highlighted both countries' commitment to strengthening cooperation and promoting peace through international partnerships.
