Thank you Andrew and Ramond for attending to the funeral service of our beloved cat Oreo. Together we survived the aftermath of cyclone Harold - years of isolation with Covid and the Air Vanuatu collapse fiasco. But in Vanuatu regardless of gender, color, creed or species - you will be afforded a Christian burial.

Eulogy for Oreo

Today we remember Oreo — the small black guardian of Freshwater Plantation, whose presence was far larger than his paws.

Oreo was not just a cat. He was loyal in the way of a dog, yet carried the unmistakable confidence and attitude of a cat who knew exactly who he was. He chose his people, and once chosen, his devotion never wavered. Guests quickly learned that they weren’t truly welcomed to the plantation until they had been inspected by Oreo, the official greeter, moving with quiet authority as though the whole property were his to watch over.

He had his own tastes, too — refusing the cliché of milk in favour of cool, clean water, and developing a fondness for Spaghetti Bolognese that became part of his legend. These small, endearing details are the threads that now weave the ache of memory into something tender and lasting.

Oreo took his responsibilities seriously. He hunted with purpose, and every mouse was presented with pride to Klaas and Vny, as if to say, “I have done my job. Are you satisfied?” In those moments, he wasn’t just a pet — he was a partner in the daily life of the plantation.

At only six years old, his passing feels deeply unfair. There should have been more mornings, more greetings at the door, more quiet footsteps in the garden, more shared meals and familiar rituals. The loss leaves a silence in the spaces he once filled — a silence that speaks of how deeply he was loved.

But grief is only possible because love was real. And Oreo was loved, fiercely and sincerely, as family.

May we remember him not with only sorrow, but with gratitude — for the companionship he gave, the character he showed, and the spirit he brought to Freshwater Plantation. A small black cat, a great soul, and an irreplaceable friend.
