WHUR 96.3 FM – Howard University is Washington’s only stand-alone radio station and one of the few university-owned commercial radio stations in America, broadcasting since 1971 to nearly a half million listeners daily in five states and can now be heard around the globe on the web at whur.com. The first radio station in the Washington area to broadcast in HD, WHUR is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious NAB Marconi for Best Urban Station of the Year and NAB Crystal Radio Award for Excellence in Community Service. Howard University’s WHUR-FM Radio officially converted to digital broadcasting on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, becoming the first commercial radio station in the metropolitan Washington area to use a digital signal or HD RadioTM technology. A little more than two-and-a-half years later, on November 16, 2006, WHUR-WORLD, 96.3 HD-2 was launched, offering new programming options of a progressive mix of music and information and the same high-quality sound as our parent station WHUR. Musical programming on WHUR-WORLD is jazz-intensive and also features blues, soul, hip-hop, African-American folk, and world music. Other periodic short- and long-form programming elements include “Black History Moments,” fitness tips, and social and cultural specials, as well as provocative weekly talk shows shedding light on issues ranging from money matters to domestic abuse. Called “the other side of WHUR,” the WHUR-WORLD signal is also streamed on www.whurworld.com. WHUR WORLD was the distinguished recipient of the 2008 NAB HD Radio Multicast award for its innovative work in programming on a multicast channel.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sunday, September 27, 2026) — WHUR 96.3 FM is mourning the loss of longtime broadcaster, singer, television host and beloved member of the WHUR family, Angela Stribling, whose warm, soothing voice became part of the soundtrack of Washington-area radio for decades.
This statement was released this morning from her husband Ken Washington, Ph.D. “It is with broken heart that I share that my beloved wife, Angela Marie Stribling passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 26, after a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. Her sister Darlene and I were by her side.” Dr. Washington went on to say “A Celebration of Life” for Angela will be held in Washington, D.C. A date and venue will be announced.
For generations of WHUR listeners, Angela Stribling was more than a radio personality. She was a familiar voice, a trusted presence and a gentle spirit whose warmth came through whether she was behind a microphone, on television or performing on stage.
Angela became an important part of the legacy of WHUR’s Original Quiet Storm, the groundbreaking format that began at Howard University in 1976 with the late Melvin Lindsey. Stribling became the first woman to host the Original Quiet Storm, carrying forward a tradition that has become an enduring part of Black radio and Washington’s cultural history.
