For 100 years, W.W. Clyde & Co. has taken on tough projects in challenging conditions. The work has changed over the decades, and so have the solutions. But the commitment to finding a way forward has stayed the same.

McFarland Solar Phase B in Southern Arizona brought that approach to a project with an enormous footprint. Working with Applied Energy Services (AES), our team completed site preparation for a 300 MW solar and battery energy storage facility across 1,800 acres.

The work involved more than moving earth. It meant preparing an expansive desert site, building access and infrastructure, and adapting construction methods to the demands of Southern Arizona's extreme heat.

Among the work completed:

- Clearing vegetation across 1,800 acres
- Moving 2.1 million cubic yards of material
- Installing 83,000 linear feet of native access roadway, scarified and compacted to a depth of 24 inches
- Constructing 5,000 linear feet of asphalt and aggregate low-water crossings with cutoff walls
- Building inverter and battery storage foundations at 58 locations throughout the array
- Placing 464 cubic yards of concrete under a specialized hot-weather plan designed for the desert conditions

That last piece required particular care. Concrete work in Southern Arizona's heat takes planning, coordination, and close attention to the conditions. Our team adapted its approach to get the work done right.

Projects like McFarland reflect how our people continue to build on a century of experience while taking on the infrastructure needs of the future. The tools and technologies may evolve, but the work still comes down to good planning, problem-solving, and people who know how to get the job done.

Tough Projects. Innovative Solutions.

A reputation is earned one project at a time. We intend to keep earning ours.

Not every concrete solution looks the way you’d expect.

Our joint venture partner, Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, shared a great look at how the team is using lightweight cellular concrete on the 2100 North Project to support the bridge abutment.

It’s one of the specialized solutions helping move this project forward, and we’re glad to be working alongside Wadsworth and Utah DOT to bring it all together.

You don’t get better by taking the easy way through.

At W.W. Clyde & Co., tough projects push us to think differently, solve problems, and learn from the people around us. Every challenge is an opportunity to improve, and every project leaves us better prepared for the next.

It’s how we’ve grown, adapted, and found innovative solutions for 100 years.

When they ask what we drive, we let the jobsite answer 😏

Better commutes take more than adding lanes. They take thoughtful planning, strong partnerships, and solutions built for the future.

W.W. Clyde & Co. is working alongside the Utah DOT , project designers, and subcontractors on the Pioneer Crossing improvements in Lehi and Saratoga Springs in Utah County. The project is adding roadway capacity and a flexible lane system to help manage traffic as these communities continue to grow.

It’s also a project built with the long view in mind. By crushing and reusing approximately 25,000 tons of existing concrete as road base, the team has reduced material waste and eliminated an estimated 2,500 truck trips on I-15.

We’re grateful to UDOT and every member of the project team whose coordination and hard work are bringing these improvements to life for the people who rely on this roadway every day.

Clyde Companies’ expansion into Colorado began in 2018 with the acquisition of Scott Contracting, followed by Interstate Highway Construction (IHC) in 2020. Both brought new teammates, local knowledge, and opportunities into our story.

In 2023, these Colorado operations became part of W.W. Clyde & Co., forming what is now our Great Plains Region. The move brought together the strengths of our Colorado teams with the way W.W. Clyde has done business for a century: building trust, keeping our word, and standing behind our work. By investing in our people and carrying those values forward together, we’ve continued to strengthen our capabilities and the work we do across the region.

As we look back on 100 years, we’re reminded that a company’s legacy isn’t built in one place or by one generation. It grows through the people who carry it forward and the relationships built along the way.
