How did one Tax Action Group client save approximately $42,000 in taxes through strategic tax planning?

One of our tax professionals, Adam, recently shared a client success story that demonstrates just how valuable proactive tax planning can be.

The client came to Tax Action Group with a concern many successful business owners face:

โ€œI'm making a lot of money. How can I make the most of it without losing so much to taxes?โ€

Instead of simply preparing the client's tax return and calculating what they owed, Adam helped identify and implement several tax saving strategies.

Here's how those strategies added up:

Strategy #1: Business Restructuring | Approximately $9,000 Saved

The client was operating an LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship, reporting business income on Schedule C.

Adam helped restructure how the business was taxed by making an S Corporation election and establishing reasonable W-2 compensation for the owner.

This allowed qualifying business profits to pass through without being subject to self employment tax, while the owner's wages remained subject to applicable payroll taxes.

Approximate tax savings: $9,000.

Strategy #2: Retirement Planning | Approximately $10,000 Saved

After restructuring the business, Adam helped the client take advantage of another opportunity: retirement planning.

The client established a Solo 401(k) and made eligible retirement contributions, reducing current taxable income while investing in their financial future.

Because the client was in a higher tax bracket, these contributions provided substantial tax benefits.

Approximate additional tax savings: $10,000.

Strategy #3: Real Estate Investment | Approximately $23,000 Saved

Adam also worked with the client to evaluate how they could put their available cash to better use.

They identified an opportunity to invest in a short term rental property.

Through the client's qualifying participation in the rental activity and a cost segregation study, they were able to accelerate eligible depreciation deductions.

This resulted in approximately $75,000 in deductions that could be used against qualifying income.

Approximate additional tax savings: $23,000.

TOTAL APPROXIMATE TAX SAVINGS: $42,000

Three strategies. One coordinated tax plan. Approximately $42,000 in savings.

But here's what makes this success story so important:

These results didn't happen by waiting until tax season.

The S Corporation election had to be made within the applicable deadlines. Retirement contributions required planning and coordination. The real estate investment and depreciation strategy required careful evaluation and implementation.

Each decision was part of a larger strategy designed around the client's business, income, and financial goals.

Without proactive planning, the client could have missed opportunities to reduce their tax liability and put more of their earnings toward building long term wealth.

This is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning.

At Tax Action Group, we don't just look at what happened financially throughout the year. We work with our clients to make strategic decisions before the year is over.

Because successful business owners shouldn't have to wait until tax season to find out what they could have done differently.

Plan Ahead. Protect What You've Built.

You've worked hard to build your business. But have you planned for what happens when it's time to move on?

Whether you're planning to sell your business, pass it down to family, or transfer ownership to a partner, your exit strategy can have a significant impact on your taxes.

Many business owners spend years focused on growing their company but overlook one important question: How much of that value will they actually keep when it's time to leave?

The timing of your exit, how the transaction is structured, and the type of assets involved can all affect your tax liability.

The good news? Planning ahead gives you more time to evaluate your options and make informed decisions.

At Tax Action Group, we believe tax planning shouldn't stop at growing your business. It should also consider how you eventually transition out of it.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have you started thinking about your business exit strategy?

Your business had a profitable year. So why doesn't your bank account reflect it? ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Here's something many business owners don't realize: Profit and cash flow are two very different things.

Your business can report a profit while cash is tied up in inventory, unpaid customer invoices, equipment purchases, or debt payments.

And here's where tax planning comes in: Depending on your accounting method and circumstances, you could owe taxes on income that doesn't match the cash currently sitting in your account.

That's why understanding your numbers throughout the year matters just as much as knowing what you owe at tax time.

Business owners: Do you regularly review your cash flow, or do you mainly focus on revenue?

๐Ÿ“… The End of the Year Is Approaching! Is Your Tax Strategy Ready?

As 2026 comes to a close, now is the time to start thinking about your taxes not when filing season arrives.

Many business owners and high income earners wait until tax season to review their finances, but by then, some valuable tax saving opportunities may already be gone.

The decisions you make before December 31 could have a significant impact on your tax liability.

From retirement contributions and business expenses to deductions and strategic investments, there are several opportunities worth reviewing before the year ends.

At Tax Action Group, we believe effective tax planning happens before the year ends, not after.

TAX TIP: Did You Know Your Business Could Have Unclaimed Money?

Many business owners focus on tracking expenses, managing cash flow, and preparing for taxes. But there's another financial detail that often gets overlooked: unclaimed property.

Uncashed checks, forgotten bank accounts, and certain customer credits can sometimes become unclaimed property under state law.

Here's something important to know: Businesses may have two responsibilities when it comes to unclaimed property.

โœ”๏ธ Claiming money: Your business could have funds waiting to be recovered.

โœ”๏ธ Reporting money: Your business may also be required to report and turn over certain unclaimed funds to the appropriate state after a specified period.

Requirements vary by state, so it's important to understand the rules that apply to your business.

The takeaway? Good financial management goes beyond filing tax returns. Reviewing overlooked financial obligations and opportunities is another way to protect what you've built.

Plan Ahead. Protect What You've Built.
