Most of the time, we hear about being in fight or flight. But what do you know about being in a FREEZE response? If you've been under stress for a long time, eventually you can lose the energy to fight or run away. And instead, to survive, you go into a freeze response. This is your brain's way of conserving energy. Basically you're playing opposum.
It can even feel good when you get to this place of being in freeze because you notice that you seem to be bothered less by stress. But do not be fooled, resilence and a freeze state are not the same thing. Even if you're in a functional freeze and able to go about daily life, you aren't helpfing yourself by staying there. If someone comes by with a rope when you're in the "freeze pit" please grab that rope!
Want to see what a FIGHT/FLIGHT RESPONSE looks like in the brain? See below!
This example listed in Comments is a snapshot of what we see while you're in our zero gravity chair relaxing. This data is of four different areas of your brain, two on the left hemisphere and two on the right.
In this image, we see that the frontal poles are relatively balanced between the left and right hemispheres. When you look at the temporals, you can see an obvious imbalance. The right side is much more active than the left.
When you are in fight/flight, this is what it looks like in your brain. It's not just that you're irritable, angry, sleep deprived or have racing thoughts, increased blood pressure and heart rate.
It. Is. In. Your. Brain.
The good news, is that in just a few sessions, your brain can begin to get to that place of balance faster. And that's what it's about.
If you're stuck and need help finding some balance in your life, give us a call. Experience the power of nueromodulation for yourself!
CASE STUDY
We just finished a new client's 4th session. Client is in his early 50s, military background and now works in the medical field on the night shift, and has several health issues he's dealing with personally for many years.
He had two sessions a week for two consecutive weeks. Here are the reported changes from self assessment on how satisfied he is with five main areas in his life. This is a 1-10 scale where 1 is very very unsatified and 10 is highly satisfied. The first score represents Session 1 (ten days ago) and the second score reporesents Session 4 (today).
Energy level 8/10
Mood regulation 10/10
Sleep 4/9
Respond to Stress 5/7
Thinking Abilities 7/10
Daily chronic pain went from pain level 7 to 4!! No other changes.
From the brain data readings of the temportal lobes:
physical stress resilience improved from a 39/100 to 88/100.
Just ten days to dramatically shift sleep, thinking, and pain reduction. He says he feels brighter and lighter and he's completing tasks that are usually hard to find motivation for.

What if some of the beliefs you hold about yourself aren’t actually truths, but simply thoughts your brain has practiced over and over again? 🧠
I’m an imposter.
I should be farther along by now.
I can never get ahead.
Other people have it figured out better than I do.
The tricky thing about beliefs is that they often feel like facts. But here’s the reality: A thought can feel true without being objectively true.
Our brains are constantly learning through repetition, reinforcement, and emotionally meaningful experiences. Over time, certain thought patterns can become increasingly familiar and automatic—and familiarity can be surprisingly easy to mistake for “truth.”
The good news? Your brain can learn new patterns, too.
In our newest blog, we explore the neuroscience behind how beliefs become ingrained, why emotion can make certain thought patterns more powerful, and how reframing, gratitude, and repetition can help you begin practicing healthier, more balanced beliefs.
Because sometimes, one of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is:
“Is this really true—or is it simply familiar?”

We often assume unhealthy habits are simply a matter of poor self-control. But sometimes, there's more happening beneath the surface.
When we're stressed, overwhelmed, depleted, anxious, or emotionally uncomfortable, the brain naturally seeks ways to change that internal state.
Shopping can provide reward and excitement. Sugar can provide comfort and pleasure. Alcohol can temporarily reduce tension. Caffeine can provide stimulation when we're depleted or unmotivated. Scrolling can distract us from uncomfortable thoughts and emotions.
And here's where habits can become deeply reinforced:
STRESS → BEHAVIOR → RELIEF/REWARD → REINFORCEMENT
The brain learns, “When I feel this way, doing this makes me feel better.”
Repeat that cycle enough times, and what started as an occasional coping strategy can become an automatic response.
The problem? What provides temporary relief doesn't necessarily create long-term regulation.
So when you're trying to change a behavior, don't only ask, “How do I stop?”
Ask a different question:
“What need is this behavior meeting?”
Relief? Comfort? Energy? Stimulation? Escape? Reward?
Because sometimes lasting change isn't just about removing a behavior. It's about understanding what your brain is trying to accomplish—and finding a healthier way to meet the same need.

" Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): After reviewing nearly 300,000 functional brain scans related to behavior it is clear that head injuries are a leading cause of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, PTSD, ADHD/ADD, substance abuse, psychosis, borderline and antisocial personality disorders, dementia, and aggression. Concussions and TBIs also increase the risk of su***de. When the brain has functional damage due to a head injury, it’s critical to heal the brain in order to overcome any mental health problems."
Concussions, whiplash, and continuing softer bumps and bruises to the head all add up and can cause much more damage than a goose egg. Don't let these injuries add up to self harm. Please seek help!
See a doctor. Get imaging. Get rest.
And we're here to help too. At Cereset we see positive improvements sometimes even after just the first session.
But please. Don't just wait for this to get better on its own. Especially if it's not the first incident. Seek help before it develops into something much worse.
September is Su***de Prevention Month. After being a Psychiatrist for over 40 years, it's clear to me that suicidal thoughts and brains work differently.
Amen Clinics has scanned hundreds of patients who have attempted su***de and many more who have thought about taking their own life. The SPECT scans of these patients revealed abnormalities in the brain, especially in these areas:
* Temporal Lobes: Brain SPECT imaging shows that people with suicidal thoughts and su***de attempts often have abnormalities in the left temporal lobe. In an Amen Clinics study, we saw left temporal lobe problems in 62 percent of our patients who had serious suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
* Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): After reviewing nearly 300,000 functional brain scans related to behavior it is clear that head injuries are a leading cause of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, PTSD, ADHD/ADD, substance abuse, psychosis, borderline and antisocial personality disorders, dementia, and aggression. Concussions and TBIs also increase the risk of su***de. When the brain has functional damage due to a head injury, it’s critical to heal the brain in order to overcome any mental health problems. At Amen Clinics, 40 percent of our patients have had a significant brain injury.
* Prefrontal Cortex: A large-scale study by researchers at Portland State University found that about 22 percent of people who died by su***de were legally intoxicated at the time of their death. Brain scans show that alcohol lowers function in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region involved in impulse control, judgment, and decision-making.
* Anterior Cingulate Gyrus: People with overactivity in this area of the brain tend to get stuck on negative thoughts, which is one of the traits we see in people with suicidal thoughts and behavior.
Trauma doesn’t come in just one form and it doesn’t always leave visible scars.
How many types of trauma do you recognize in your own life? It could be recent or so long ago you hadn't even learned to speak yet. There are very few people out there who have not endured trauma of some kind. But it is possible to release stuck stress patterns and live a life that is not stuck in survival mode.
At Cereset, we help your brain observe the stuck patterns and your brain does the rest of the work itself - releasing stress as the brain balances. And the result is feeling better, feeling new, and feeling alive without constant hypervigilance.
