Upcoming Workshops

Last chance to register!

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Level: Intermediate Adults

Spots Available: 6 spots

Cost: $75

Date & Time: Saturday, November 7th from 10:00am - 3:00pm

(with a 1-hour break at 12:00pm for lunch)*

*During the lunch break students are asked to either bring their own lunch or are welcome to explore our many restaurant offerings around Downtown Springfield.

This one-day drawing workshop allows students to dedicate 4 hours of working time on a portrait of their choosing. You may be choosing to draw a self-portrait, a photo of a family member, a friend, or even just a random reference photo you have found of someone you want to draw to gain more practice. The purpose of this workshop is to have hands-on guidance, from instructor Ashley Laren, to aid you in every step of the portrait drawing process while also building your confidence in drawing people. You will receive support with your drawings proportions, tonal value for shading, as well as proper techniques on capturing the essence of the person you are drawing whether that be hair, facial expressions, clothing, and the like. Students are asked to come to the class with some prior knowledge of portraiture and human proportions, but they will also have access to guides and instruction from the teacher to help with proportions to set you in the right direction as you are drawing. If you have previously been enrolled in a portrait drawing course taught at Forming Studios, this would be a great way to build on your practice, but previous enrollment in said class is not required for participation.

Join this one-day workshop to advance your knowledge and proficiency on drawing portraits with expert guidance in a supportive learning environment. By the end of the day, you will have a completed portrait of the reference of your choosing.

Prior to the Course:

Students are asked to email a copy of the reference photo they would like to use for this class at the time of registration. The instructor will make sure to print it out and have it available for you on the day of the workshop. Please ensure that the photo you would like to use is high resolution. If the quality of the photo does not seem adequate for use as a reference during this workshop, the instructor will contact you for another reference photo to use. References will be printed in black and white.

Stipulations for reference photos:

Headshots from the chest up
Ensure none of the face or head/hair are cut off in the photo
High resolution photo
May choose a reference in front view, side profile, or ¾ view

Students have the option to bring their own supplies or use the available supplies provided for use during the class.

Materials:

Graphite Pencils
Plastic Eraser
Kneaded Eraser
Retractable Eraser
Eraser Pencil
Blending Stumps
Drawing Paper

Students will receive step-by-step guidance while creating with the instructor’s support. The practice encourages calm, focus, creativity, and a sense of artistic accomplishment. You’ll also leave with ideas for continuing at home. Guided by the Zentangle® motto, “Anything is possible one stroke at a time”, this class offers an accessible, structured way to relax, draw and tap into your creativity.

What is included:
Class fee covers all materials - Fine line markers, Tiles, pencils, and a tangle pattern reference guide. All materials are yours to keep at the end of class! This will enable you to continue your tangling practice at home.

Due to circumstances beyond our control... the universe has a plan of working out in extraordinary ways.

Forming Art Studios is moving into the gallery!

Pardon our mess as we get this new studio space up and running. We are excited for all of the opportunities this will provide our arts community here in downtown springfield! Most importantly, the ability to be open when the gallery is! We haven't had that.... well ever. So this is a huge change for us and we are so stinking excited!

Goal is to be properly running by First Friday Art Walk in August!

Until then, come see the mess we have created and shop some amazing local art 💕

Sometimes you have to step away from what you love... so you can come back to it with fresh eyes.

I absolutely love painting my Probably Enchanted Cottages, and I can't thank all of you enough for patiently waiting for each new one to make its appearance. Your excitement for every release means more than you know.

But every now and then, I need to wander.
Over the past few weeks I've been working on abstracts and a few other creative projects. Those little detours refill my creative well and remind me why I fell in love with painting in the first place.

Now... I think it's time to come home.
Here's a little sneak peek at the newest Probably Enchanted Cottage.
