Remember Tuesday’s post about Actual Cash Value? Here’s one reason it matters.

Imagine: 🚘 You owe $28,000 on your vehicle. 💰 Your coverage provider determines its value at $23,000 for a covered total loss. 😳 Depending on your loan and coverage, you could still owe a difference.

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) may help cover some or all of the difference between your outstanding auto loan balance and your vehicle’s value after a covered total loss. The amount, if any, depends on the specific terms of the coverage and loan.

💡 A few things worth knowing: • GAP isn’t automatically included with standard auto coverage. • It may be offered through dealerships, lenders, or certain coverage providers. • Coverage limits, exclusions, and eligibility vary. Not every remaining loan charge is necessarily covered.

Here’s what many drivers don't realize: the amount paid for a covered total loss may not be based on what you paid for your car OR what you still owe on it.

The vehicle’s value may take into account:
✔️ Year, make, model and mileage
✔️ Condition before the accident
✔️ Comparable vehicles in your market
✔️ Features and options that affect its value

💡 If you owe more than your car is worth, you could still have a loan balance after the claim payment. GAP Coverage may help, depending on your policy (don't worry - we'll go over more about GAP later this week).

Randy's Tip: If your vehicle is declared a total loss, ask for the valuation report and review it for accuracy. The amount paid depends on the applicable coverage, deductible, policy terms and law.
