What should today’s school spaces be designed to do?
More than one thing.
Across K–12 education, classrooms, libraries, cafeterias, support spaces, outdoor environments and athletic facilities are being asked to work harder—and serve students in more ways.
We’re looking at eight design trends shaping how districts can approach renovation and capital planning with both immediate needs and long-term value in mind.

A Building Condition Survey may be required every five years—but its value can extend far beyond checking a box.

Done thoughtfully, a BCS can become the foundation for what comes next: identifying priorities, anticipating future needs and beginning to shape a long-term capital plan.

The question isn’t just, “What condition is our building in?”

It’s also, “What can this tell us about where we go from here?”

We’re revisiting why we see the Building Condition Survey as an opportunity to plan proactively—and make more informed decisions about your district’s future.

When is the right time to call an architect?

It’s not only when you’re ready to build.

Some of the most valuable conversations happen much earlier—when you’re identifying needs, weighing priorities, planning for the future or simply trying to understand what’s possible.

You don’t need to come to the table with all the answers. Bring the challenges. We’ll help you start framing the plan.

A school is more than classrooms. It’s the entire experience—from the moment students and families arrive to the spaces where they learn, gather and connect.

We’re excited to begin work with Wayne Central School District on improvements designed to make that experience even better.

From a new multipurpose space and updated libraries, hallways and foyers to finishes, circulation and safer, more efficient bus and parent drop-off areas, we’re looking at the district as a whole—finding opportunities to create spaces that work better for everyone who uses them.

Because thoughtful school design isn’t just about what a space looks like. It’s about how it feels, functions and supports the people who use it every day.

Community is at the heart of what we do—and sometimes, supporting it means trading our drawings for drivers. ⛳

Recently, Edge Architecture was proud to be represented by two teams at two local golf tournaments supporting AIA Rochester and the Rotary Sunshine Camp.

We’re grateful for opportunities like these to step outside the studio, connect with others, and support organizations that make a meaningful impact in the communities where we live, work, and design.

A great couple of days on the course—and an even better reason to be there.

DESIGNED FOR THE WAY A COMMUNITY USES ITS LIBRARY.

The transformation of Rochester Public Library’s Lincoln Branch was about more than updating a space—it was about making the library work better for the people who rely on it.

The full renovation rethought layout and circulation, strengthened connections between key spaces, improved sightlines, and created dedicated areas for children, technology, staff, and performing arts and cultural programming. The result is a more welcoming, functional environment designed around the many ways the community gathers, learns, connects, and accesses resources.

Because a library isn’t simply a place to find information. It’s a place designed to serve its community.

A new school year. A fresh look at your spaces.

Learning doesn’t happen only in the classroom. It happens in libraries and cafeterias, corridors and commons, athletic spaces and outdoor areas—everywhere students gather, connect, recharge, and grow.

As a new school year begins, it’s a good time to look at familiar spaces with fresh eyes. Could an underused area work harder? Could connections across campus be stronger? Could today’s conversations help shape tomorrow’s capital plans?

At Edge, we look beyond individual rooms to consider the school environment as a whole—creating thoughtful, adaptable spaces that support students, educators, and long-term district goals.

Because every space has the potential to support learning.

REIMAGINING A SPACE THAT HAS SERVED GENERATIONS.

As part of East Rochester Union Free School District’s Capital Improvement Project, the high school pool is getting its first major transformation since 1962.

The renovation brings new life—and light—into the space with new finishes, expanded daylighting, views from the courtyard and interior corridor, durable tile, warm wood-look phenolic panels, and colorful exposed ductwork.

Accessibility was also integral to the design. A new ramp into the pool creates a more inclusive entry while giving younger students a comfortable way to wade into the water.

It’s a transformation designed not simply to update the pool, but to create a brighter, more welcoming and accessible space for students and the East Rochester community.

Shaping the direction of design.

WE’RE HONORED TO BE RECOGNIZED.

Edge Architecture has been named a 2026 Rochester Business Journal Leaders in Construction & Real Estate honoree in the Architect category.

For more than two decades, we’ve had the opportunity to help shape spaces throughout the Rochester region—places where people learn, work, gather, connect, and build community. This recognition reflects the creativity, technical expertise, and commitment our entire team brings to that work every day.

We’re grateful to our clients, consultants, construction partners, and community for the trust and collaboration that make our work possible—and proud to be part of an industry continuing to shape the future of our region.

Thank you to the Rochester Business Journal for this recognition. We look forward to celebrating alongside this year’s fellow honorees on October 20.

Shaping the direction of design.

The office has to do more than provide a place to work.

It should make collaboration easier. Give people choices in how and where they focus. Reflect the organization behind it. And create the kinds of experiences that are difficult to replicate anywhere else.

That changes the design conversation.

Instead of asking, “How many people can we fit?” we can ask, “How can this space help our people do their best work?”

The difference is where thoughtful workplace design begins.
