🍂 WHY DO TREES LOSE THEIR LEAVES? 🍁

Every fall, Minnesota puts on quite the show; but have you ever wondered what’s actually happening inside a tree as those leaves change color and eventually hit the ground?

It’s not as simple as cold weather killing the leaves. Trees actually prepare to let them go.

As the days get shorter, deciduous trees begin preparing for winter. They recover valuable nutrients from their leaves, chlorophyll begins to break down, fall colors emerge, and eventually a specialized abscission zone forms where each leaf connects to the branch. The tree is essentially preparing itself for winter one leaf at a time.

And while falling leaves are completely normal this time of year, premature leaf drop can sometimes tell a very different story.

We put together another Know the Facts sheet explaining why trees lose their leaves, where those beautiful fall colors come from, and when leaf loss might actually be something worth paying attention to.

Take a look, learn something new, and enjoy the colors while they last!
