Welcome back to Episode 2: Vetting Trader Joe’s with a Clinical Pharmacist! 🛒🔬

Let’s be honest: Trader Joe’s is everyone’s (including myself) favorite grocery store. The seasonal items, the snacks, the friendly vibe—it’s great. But when it comes to being allergy-friendly or managing severe food sensitivities, it is far from it.

As a clinical pharmacist, I spent decades evaluating actual clinical data, not marketing.

Today, we audited breakfast and snack aisles — not all items of course — and we found a massive trend: products that sound completely safe on the front, but hide major triggers on the back.

Here is the data breakdown from our recent run:

🥣The Cornflakes Cereal: You would think cornflakes are just corn, right? But the back label reveals it contains barley malt. Barley is a highly reactive grain for sensitive digestive systems. Crucially, unlike gluten or wheat, federal food labeling laws do not require manufacturers to list safety warnings for barley. It isn’t put in bold print, meaning it might be completely missed by most people who rely only on the allergen warning box at the bottom.

🍿The Maple Flavored Popcorn: Popcorn is a classic go-to safe snack. But Trader Joe’s loves to use coconut oil as their healthy fat default. While great for some, if coconut is your specific and sometimes severe trigger, this trendy health food becomes an absolute trap.

🌽The Cornbread Chips: The front screams “corn,” but the structural matrix on the back shows it is heavily cut with standard wheat flour to achieve that specific crunch.

We treat the grocery store as a team. I’m teaching my children to ignore the friendly packaging claims and scan the exact structural matrix of the ingredients on the back.

The series continues! Next week, we are headed straight to the freezer section. You won’t believe what is hiding in basic potato and vegetable bags. 🥶🍟

Welcome to Episode 1 of my new series: Vetting the Grocery Store with a Clinical Pharmacist! 👩‍⚕️ 🛒🔬

Decades in medicine have taught me to look at data, not marketing. When families are navigating severe food sensitivities or food protein allergies , grocery shopping is a clinical screening process.

But here is the truth that many people miss: It isn’t always about hidden additives, artificial dyes, or vague terms.

The real challenge? Very common, wholesome ingredients that the world labels as ‘safe,’ ‘hypoallergenic,’ or ‘allergy-friendly.’ Ingredients like rice, quinoa, oat, or coconut oil are frequently used as bases in specialty chocolates, wholesome breakfasts, and snacks. But in our world, a healthy grain can be a severe trigger. ⚠️

Together with my children, we treat shopping at Whole Foods as a team framework. I’m teaching them how to ignore the front-of-package marketing badges and audit the exact matrix of the ingredient list. We look for absolute alignment with their body, not what a brand defines as ‘healthy.’

This is just the first of many product breakdowns. In my upcoming reels, we are going aisle by aisle to pull back the curtain on snacks, baking ingredients, dairy alternatives, and more.

Session Spotlight: Standard of Care Is Live. Are You?

California pharmacy is entering a new era of patient care, and the standard of care model is helping define what comes next.

At CPhA Day at Elevate Rx + HOD 2026, join us for a timely discussion on how California’s standard of care (SOC) model is reshaping pharmacy practice and moving the profession beyond a product- and task-focused approach toward a more consistent, patient-centered model of care.

This session also marks the launch of a year-long initiative from CPhA and the Clinical Care Community to develop a white paper defining what a standard of care model means for California pharmacy.

Attendees will explore how the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) can translate SOC into day-to-day patient care and the important role pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists each play in bringing this model to life.

📅 Saturday, October 17, 2026
🕘 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM PDT
📍 Building 9501, Room 207

If you want to better understand where pharmacy practice is headed in California and what standard of care could mean for your own practice, this is a session you won’t want to miss.

Ari and I met during the summer before his senior year in high school. That year he completed Clinicare’s highly competitive Summer Internship Program through our partnership with AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School

Ari returned this summer to help manage the data collections for our pharmacist-led clinical services, and proved how pharmacists impact patients’ health outcomes by improving their hypertension and diabetes.

Now heading into his third year at UC Berkeley, he helped our team with complex medical data like a seasoned pro!

Ari tracked critical blood pressure metrics and patient A1C improvement trends, providing the concrete data needed to further prove what we already know to be true: pharmacist-led clinical services fundamentally save lives.

I am very much looking forward to crossing paths with Ari in the future and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!

🥼Most people don’t realize that residency is structured just like a medical residency!
👩‍⚕️While not legally required to practice, it has become the definitive choice for most graduates who want to master their clinical expertise and advance their careers in more specialized areas.
📚The stakes are incredibly high from day one. On top of demanding clinical rotations, residents must study for and pass two notoriously difficult board exams to become fully licensed pharmacists within the first three months of their program!

🗓️⏰I know we are already at the end of July and the residency officially started few weeks ago. If you know me, you know my schedule is always a non-stop chaos running the pharmacy and clinics—so yes, I am definitely a little late to the party with this post!

📖🩺While clinical trainees nationwide are pushing through their initial training blocks and tackling exam season, it’s the perfect time to look at the vital work they do during this residency year and after program completion.
💊🩺When I started over 20 years ago, my vision was to build an advanced practice pharmacy care center. Through our partnership with the USC Mann School School of Pharmacy, pharmacists get to step into the role of a primary care after training for a year at

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️Our residency program puts clinicians on the front lines of — managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and more. They manage and optimize complex therapies, order and interpret lab results, and provide the counseling patients need to achieve their best health outcomes.

Year after year, seeing our trainees transform into confident clinicians is the ultimate reward. We couldn’t do it without the amazing legacy left behind by everyone who has walked through our doors.

📣Calling all USC Mann Pharmacy Residency Programs Clinicare alumni! What is your best advice for surviving the initial couple of months of residency?
🎉Tag yourself or a fellow Clinicare alum in the comments below so we can celebrate your journey and look back on how far the prog

Part 2 of my prior post.

👩‍⚕️Preventing side effects, medication and supplement interactions, medication and disease interactions are all important factors of any successful treatment plan.

👩‍⚕️Remember that medications only work if you know how to take or use them correctly, how to manage side effects if experiencing them and how to avoid potentially harmful interactions.

👩‍⚕️Yet another reminder that medication related problems might not become obvious right away and often times, instead of adjusting therapy or addressing drug-related problems, patients get prescribed more medications.

👩‍⚕️Choose your pharmacist wisely.
