Today, we finally get to share the news we have waited months to announce: Maggie is recovered and cleared for adoption!

For those who missed the beginning of her story, Maggie was found as a severely injured stray in rural Mississippi. When she arrived at Wright-Way Rescue on May 27, 2026, her badly damaged leg was dangling, most of her paw was missing, and she had severe inflammation and infection.

Her leg needed to be amputated. But bloodwork revealed another serious threat: Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease, and severe anemia that left her too unstable for surgery.

Her red blood cell level was initially just 12%. With treatment, it climbed to 17%, then into the 20s. By August 20, it had reached 35%. Progress came slowly, and our medical team had to consider her bloodwork alongside her overall condition before proceeding with surgery.

Approximately every 10 days, we drew blood again. Each time, we hoped the results would bring Maggie closer to the surgery she needed. There was improvement, but the wait was far longer than we ever imagined.

And throughout that wait, Maggie needed us every single day.

Our staff helped her walk. They cleaned and wrapped her badly injured leg, lined her kennel with soft blankets, and coaxed her to eat and take her medications and supplements. They offered nourishing food, chicken, beef, and little treats to encourage her appetite. Day after day, they cared for her while treatment gave her body time to grow stronger.

Never in a million years did we imagine her care would last so long or be so intense. But it took Maggie that long to become stable enough for surgery—and we were going to see her through.

Through every bandage change, assisted walk, and blood draw, Maggie remained the most gentle, patient creature. We absolutely adore her.

Giving up was never an option—for us or for Maggie.

About four weeks ago, she finally underwent her amputation. Her care became intense all over again, but this time, her healing progressed quickly. She adapted to life on three legs and started wagging her tail almost right away.

Today, Maggie is happy, recovered, and finally has encouraging blood results—for the first time in what feels like forever. More than four months after arriving, she is ready for a loving home of her own.

To every donor who helped carry the cost of her care, and to the Parrish Animal Welfare (PAW) Fund for its generous support: thank you for making this possible.

We never know when a dog like Maggie will arrive needing our help. When they do, there isn’t time to raise the funds before committing to saving their life. Your support allows us to say yes. It allows us to welcome dogs with serious medical challenges, fully commit to the care they need, and keep going—even when their recovery takes months longer than anyone expected.

Because of you, Maggie had clean bandages, soft blankets, medications, repeated lab work, surgery, and people beside her through it all. Together, we helped her survive. Now, together, we can help her find the home she deserves.

Interested in meeting Maggie? She will be at our Adoption Center this Friday through Sunday. Come meet her Friday 2pm-8pm or Saturday & Sunday 11am-5pm or email [email protected] to make a reservation to adopt Maggie!

Thank you for allowing us to do what we do for Maggie and dogs like her. She is here because of YOU. Please share her story and help her next chapter begin. 🐾
