BOWERS BEACH HAS A HISTORY WORTH GATHERING FOR
Historical Marker To Be Unveiled On Monday, Oct. 5.

A town once called Whitwell’s Delight. A steamboat bringing Philadelphia visitors to the sand while loading oysters for market. A museum that began in just two rooms.

At 11 a.m. on Monday, October 5, come celebrate the unveiling of a new State of Delaware historical marker honoring the Bowers Beach Maritime Museum. The Delaware Public Archives lists the location as 3357 Main Street, Frederica. Bring someone who loves the bay—or someone who hasn't yet discovered this corner of Delaware.

Between the St. Jones and Murderkill rivers, Bowers grew where waterways connected people, work, and opportunity. This is Lenni-Lenape ancestral homeland, with a history that reaches well before European settlement. The Archives records the name Whitwell’s Delight in 1675 and Bowers in 1734.

That cheerful old name is one small discovery. Another is the steamboat *Frederica*, which brought tourists from Philadelphia to enjoy the beach while loading cargo, including oysters. Picture those two worlds meeting at the waterfront: a day of pleasure for visitors, a day of work for the people whose livelihoods depended on the bay.

Oysters also helped shape community life. The University of Delaware’s historical study of the bay identifies Bowers as one of Delaware’s oyster-industry centers and describes Big Thursday, when oystermen and their families gathered to celebrate the season’s reopening. Those celebrations also reflected segregation, with a separate Big Saturday for Black residents. Remembering a place fully means making room for all its people.

The museum helps us make those connections through maritime artifacts, photographs, displays, and curiosities that commemorate Delaware Bay and its watermen. Its collection offers a way to see the town through the lives and work of the people who shaped it. Community events, including the Buccaneer Bash and oyster heritage celebrations, carry that history beyond the display cases.

And here is the third lovely detail: this institution began in **1975 with informal displays in just two rooms** of an old Main Street house. The museum expanded with a new building in 2016. Small acts of keeping and sharing can grow into something that serves generations.

That care belongs in the present, too. University of Delaware researchers and students have worked with Bowers residents on ways to protect marshes, restore shoreline protection and address flooding. Preserving memories and protecting a living community belong together.

Put the unveiling on your calendar. Invite one friend. If Bowers holds a family memory for you, share it below.

Let’s thank the people who keep these stories, celebrate the place that holds them, and help give the next generation a bay—and a community—to love.

See the Bowers Beach Maritime Museum page for details, and give it a follow.
