WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Sunday posthumously pardoned Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, who influenced Malcolm X and other civil rights leaders and was convicted of mail fraud in the 1920s. Also receiving pardons were a top Virginia lawmaker and advocates for immigrant rights, criminal justice reform and gun violence prevention. 🇯🇲

Walter Rodney (1942-1980) was a Guyanese historian, scholar, and political activist. He was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and went on to study at the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in History. Rodney is best known for his work as a historian, particularly for his book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa,” which critiques the role of European imperialism in Africa’s underdevelopment. He was also an influential political figure, serving as a member of the Working People’s Alliance in Guyana and playing a key role in the struggles for independence and social justice in the Caribbean and Africa. Sadly, Rodney was assassinated in 1980 at the age of 38, but his legacy lives on in the continued struggles for liberation and equality around the world.
