Old Friends began as a retirement and rescue facility for pensioned Thoroughbreds. Then news broke of the inconceivable death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a slaughterhouse in Japan in 2002. "We went from getting five emails a day to hundreds," noted Founder Michael Blowen. We knew such a death must never happen again. And so the plan became to bring at risk racehorses--those whose racing and breeding careers had come to an end to Old Friends, provide them with the dignified retirement they deserve, and open the space to the public. By promoting these one-time celebrated horses through a campaign of education and tourism, we realized we could draw attention to all retired Thoroughbreds and all equines in need. We are the only thoroughbred rescue / retirement facility that accepts stallions, & so we take exceptional pride in our pensioned champions, among them Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Hall of Famer, Silver Charm, Belmont winners Touch Gold, Birdstone and Ruler on Ice, Hall of Fame favorite, Lava Man, three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude, Breeders’ Cup Champions Stormy Liberal and Eldaafer and Hollywood Gold Cup winner Rail Trip. In addition to our pensioned stallions, Old Friends is home to some very deserving retired mares & geldings. Old Friends hosts tours daily by reservation only, and while our guests come to visit to a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero.
Three Breeders’ Cup Classic winners have called Old Friends home with those three wins coming in a seven-year period, kicked off with Black Tie Affair in 1991 then Alphabet Soup in 1996, and rounded out by Awesome Again in 1998.
The 1998 Breeders’ Cup is still talked about as one of the strongest fields ever assembled and it’s also one that saw half the field come to Old Friends! The trifecta of Awesome Again, Silver Charm, and Swain kicked it off with Touch Gold also finishing 8th in the race and 6th place finisher Skip Away is interred here.
We joke that Old Friends is the retirement home for Breeders’ Cup Sprint winners and for good reason – we’ve had FIVE Sprint winners call Old Friends home over the years.

We’ve had a trifecta of Breeders' Cup World Championships Turf winners call Old Friends home. 1989 winner Prized lived with us for the last four years of his life after moving to Old Friends in 2010. In 1992, Fraise won a dramatic edition of the Turf when running down Sky Classic to win by a nose in track record time! One of our current fan favorites is Little Mike, who won the race in 2012 for his third G1 victory of the year.

Can we talk about the Breeders' Cup World Championships Turf Sprint without talking about 2x winner Stormy Liberal? We think not!
Making his Breeders’ Cup debut as a 5-year-old, Stormy Liberal went off as the third longest shot in the field but proved the bettors wrong with a head victory. One year later, with much lower odds, Stormy Liberal still made it a dramatic victory when beating the race favorite by a neck with everyone else over seven lengths behind!

In 2008, Albertus Maximus had the distinction of becoming the second winner of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile when beating a group that included Well Armed, Pyro, and current Old Friends resident Surf Cat by 1 ¼ lengths!
Late Old Friends resident Eldaafer was a mainstay in the Breeders' Cup World Championships Marathon, competing in the race every year from 2009 to 2012. His biggest performance in the race came that second year when the gelding won an eventful Marathon by 1 ¾ lengths!
