After 35 Years at a Forest Hills Staple, Chef Jamie Montoya Begins a New Chapter with Montoya’s on Metropolitan Avenue

Forest Hills is preparing to welcome a major new addition to its dining scene as longtime chef Jamie Montoya opens his first namesake restaurant, Montoya’s, at the former Metro Taco location 📍102-15 Metropolitan Ave. Forest Hills, Queens, NYC

After spending more than 35 years as the head chef at the iconic Five B***o Cafe, Montoya is stepping out on his own—bringing decades of culinary consistency, bold flavor, and neighborhood loyalty into a fresh, independently driven concept.

For over three decades, Montoya helped define the identity of Five B***o Cafe, turning it into a go-to destination for vibrant Latin cuisine in Forest Hills. His influence has been felt across generations of diners, many of whom have come to associate his cooking with the neighborhood itself. Now, with Montoya’s, he’s taking that legacy and evolving it into something personal—while still delivering the flavors people have loved for years.

Partnering with Jaclyn Burke and Robbie Salameh, Montoya is building a restaurant that blends tradition with a modern edge—both in its menu and overall experience.

Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the 1939 World’s Fair Showcasing American Meets International History. Postcards Keep World’s Fair Icons Alive 07/31/2024

“The World of Tomorrow” was a dominant theme of the 1939 – 1940 World’s Fair, which attracted millions of New York residents and tourists to Flushing Meadow for a celebration of technological innovations and cultural history like no other in Queens. It spanned the period of April 30, 1939 to October 27, 1940. Over 44 million visitors attended during both summers. A few years earlier, an ash dump existed.

Since most brilliantly developed pavilions and monuments were planned as temporary structures, today it is unfortunate that very few physical remembrances exist, despite the lack of official landmark designations. Residents who have first-hand memories are diminishing, but linen-era hand-colored postcards among World’s Fair memorabilia in every form is on the rise, whether through postcard shows, eBay, or as a result of cleaning out basements and attics. These valuable keepsakes tell a unique educational story, with hopes that urban planners and individuals spanning every trade and interest, can coordinate a future World’s Fair on site, building upon the success of the more recent 1964 – 1965 World’s Fair.

Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer, often known as Dr. Ruth, “America’s best-loved therapist,” passed away on July 12 at age 96. Throughout her long, meaningful, and unique life, she earned many titles, including s*x therapist, radio and television host, professor, author, and painter, but most of all, she was an educator and an inspiration upon several generations. As an empowering woman of wisdom, one of her numerous quotes was “If you’re facing a problem, don’t tell yourself you can’t do it. Convince yourself that you have the strength to deal with almost anything.”
