“It’ll only take ten minutes.”

When a task takes longer than expected, try curiosity before criticism. Ask your student:

• How long did you expect it to take?
• How long did it actually take?
• What did you notice along the way?

Use those observations to adjust the next plan. The aim isn’t to catch them out or make them rush. It’s to practise making a more informed estimate.

The times shown are an illustrative example.

“I’m bad at school.”

A hard day can feel that way. But before a difficult moment becomes a label, there is a gentler question to ask: “What actually happened today?”

Take this illustrative example: “I forgot the materials I needed.” That describes a situation we can work on. It does not define the student.

The next question is practical: “What could help me remember next time?” One small system to try is a checklist by the door or on a backpack:

Before I leave:
✓ Notebook
✓ Assignment materials
✓ Charged device

A checklist gives the student something concrete to try, check and adjust. The conversation can focus on the next step instead of a hurtful label.

Work on the habit. Don’t label the student.

Your child knows the math—but their test grade doesn’t show it. What’s going on? 📝

Sometimes, the points lost come down to small details. Here are 5 common reasons students lose points on math tests:**

1.Missing the directions
Did the question ask them to simplify, round, or show their work? Underlining key instructions can help.

2.Hard-to-read work
A “9” that looks like a “4,” misaligned numbers, or a misplaced decimal can change the answer. Give each step some space!

3.Confusing math vocabulary
Sum and product mean different things. Reviewing math vocabulary matters just as much as practicing calculations.

4. Skipping regular practice
Homework helps students discover what they understand—and where they need help. Encourage them to mark confusing problems and ask questions.

5.Calculation mistakes
A small arithmetic error can throw off a whole problem. Practice accurate strategies and check calculations. For students with learning differences, appropriate tools and accommodations can help.

Before saying “Be more careful,” ask: “Let’s look at where you lost points.”Finding the pattern gives your child something specific to work on.

At Homework In a Café, we help students build math skills and study habits—from organizing their work to checking their answers.
