What does it mean to show hospitality to others? Today, thanks to social media, we think if we don’t have a pristine, post-worthy home or cook like a gourmet chef, then we don’t have the ability to be hospitable.
But in ancient times, all that was required to be hospitable was to notice another’s need and provide for it as best you could. (See stories like the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37 and the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4:8–17 for examples.)
For our kids, the idea that hospitality is more about seeing others and their need than it is about hosting the perfect experience is an important one to grasp. Teaching them about this can start with something as simple as inviting another family in your neighborhood over for dinner (no matter how your house looks).
Even seemingly small acts such as holding the door open for someone else or grabbing paper towels when someone spills something are great habits to encourage your kids to form. The important thing is teaching them to pay attention to others and notice when they’re in need.
When we show hospitality to others and teach our kids to do the same, it fulfills the principle Jesus set out in John 13:35 — that we will be known as His followers by our love for one another. And it opens the door for Gospel conversations that lead to life-change, not only for those who receive our hospitality, but for us and our kids as well.
Talk About This One Thing:
“What is one thing you can do for someone else this week?”
Continue the Conversation:
1. Together, read the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) and discuss ways that the Samaritan man showed hospitality in the story.
2. Read and memorize 1 Peter 4:9–10: Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.
3. Invite a family you don’t know well over for dinner or a play date this week. Encourage your kids to look after their guests while in your home and make them feel welcome.

What happens when you allow someone to look into your life, see what needs to be fixed, and then hold you responsible for doing the work to fix it? Hopefully, you grow and improve in the areas where you were struggling and also build a closer relationship with the person who’s checking in on you.
This is what it looks like for us to “sharpen” each other, to be accountable to each other. If you’ve ever had an accountability partner, teacher, coach, mentor, supervisor, or even doctor, you’ve likely had this experience (whether you wanted to or not).
But how can we teach accountability to kids?
When they’re young, chore charts and rewards systems are great ways for kids to see what they’re responsible for and be held accountable to it. It’s also empowering. It helps them see, “Look what I can do just by trying!” and “Thank you for trusting me to do this. I want to do it for you.”
As they grow and learn, dig even deeper with them. Teach them about Christ’s commands and His expectations for all of us. Help them to love Him so they will want to obey Him.
When we show our kids how wonderful it can be to live wholly submitted to the Lord and in community with others who push us to a higher standard, they learn that accountability isn’t a burden, it’s actually incredibly freeing.

Continue the Conversation:
1. Together, memorize Proverbs 27:17: Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
2. Choose one goal this week that your family can work toward together. At the end of the week, talk about how it went and what you could do to improve.
