November is American Diabetes Month, and it is a good excuse to look at the plate in front of you. 🥗

Most of us do not need a perfect diet. Small, steady habits tend to be easier to keep: adding a vegetable to a meal, noticing portion sizes, drinking water, and taking a walk after dinner when you can. One meal at a time adds up.

Every body is different, and what fits one person may not fit another. That is why we like to keep it personal. Your provider can talk with you about your own health history and what makes sense for you and your family, whether you are 9 months or 90 years old.

Meet Chase Fortune, CRNP, one of the providers here at Whitfield Family Practice in Decatur. Chase grew up in Russellville and earned three degrees from UAH: a bachelor's in Biological Science, a bachelor's in Nursing (both Cum Laude), and her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2017.

She loves family medicine and behavioral health, and she's big on building real relationships with her patients, the kind that last for years.

Away from the office, Chase is busy with her two girls, riding her horse Stella, walking her standard poodles Jake and Roxy, and catching a good concert when she can. 🐴🎶

Ragweed is the most common fall trigger, and it can keep blooming right through November. On top of that, rain and piles of wet fallen leaves give outdoor mold a place to grow. So even on a pretty Decatur afternoon, there may be more in the air than you would guess.

A stuffy nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes that hang around into the cooler months are worth paying attention to. We cannot tell what is behind your symptoms from a post, but your provider can talk through your history and help you sort out what might be going on.

Halloween is a night of costumes, candy, and family fun — and a few simple steps can help keep your little trick-or-treaters safe:

✨ Be Visible — reflective gear, bright costumes, and a flashlight or glow stick
🎭 Safe Costumes — make sure they fit properly and don't block vision; face paint is a great alternative to masks
🚶 Walk With an Adult — use sidewalks and crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing
🍬 Check Candy First — inspect everything before eating, watch for allergies and choking hazards, and toss anything unwrapped
🚗 Drivers, Slow Down — please use extra caution in neighborhoods between 5–9 PM

A stroke can happen suddenly, but knowing the warning signs can make all the difference.

Remember BE FAST when it comes to recognizing a possible stroke:

* B – Balance: Sudden trouble walking or loss of balance.
* E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes.
* F – Face: One side of the face droops.
* A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm.
* S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking.
* T – Time: Call 911 immediately.

🚨 Don’t wait to see if symptoms improve. Even if they go away, get emergency medical help. Every minute matters when a stroke occurs.
