Thank you to Thomas Lake and the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a careful, in-depth look at the Cherokee County crash that went viral earlier this year.
Bruce Hagen spoke with Thomas along with several of the cyclists involved. The story lays out what happened on the road, the differing accounts, and the questions it raises about how Georgia’s cycling laws work in practice. The piece also captures the hostility and bias cyclists face every day in Georgia, on the road and online.
Journalists who take the time to report on what cyclists face every day make Georgia’s roads safer for everyone. We’re grateful for this one.

We had a great field day at Outback Bikes last week!
Did you know that Outback Bikes is celebrating 40 years in business??!!! Always always support your local bike shop!!
Today marks 365 days since a drunk driver killed Carlos Moreno while he was riding his bike.
The driver pled guilty to 12 charges including Homicide by Vehicle in the 1st Degree. On Sept 9, 2026 he was given the maximum sentence possible for the charges - 15 years with 10 years to serve in prison.
He now decided that he doesn’t like the consequences for his actions and through his lawyer filed a Motion to Withdraw his Guilty Plea.
The prosecutor representing the State of GA is opposing this motion and filed a motion to dismiss it. However, a hearing has been set for it on November 12, 2026.
We may ask for in person support from the cycling community at the courtroom. Your presence made an enormous difference during the sentencing hearing. But for today keep Carlos’s children in your heart and ride some miles for Carlos.

Great article by John Perry in Atlanta Magazine
~ “I think the real issue is that parents are buying things thinking that what they’re purchasing are e-bikes, but in fact, what they’re buying are nonconforming electric motorcycles,” Hagen says. ~ (excerpt from article)
The e-bike boom has arrived. One teen's crash shows Atlanta is still catching up with the risks. E-bikes are the fastest-growing segment of the bicycle market and hugely popular with teens. But as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta logs a growing number of e-bike accident victims, Atlanta families must decide when to hit the brakes.
