Not that kind of QTIP!
In estate planning, QTIP stands for Qualified Terminable Interest Property.
A QTIP trust is designed to provide income to a surviving spouse during their lifetime while allowing the person who established the trust to determine who will ultimately receive the remaining assets.
This may be especially helpful for blended families or anyone who wants to balance two important goals:
• Providing for a surviving spouse
• Preserving assets for children or other chosen beneficiaries
• Maintaining control over the eventual distribution of the trust
• Potentially qualifying the assets for the marital deduction
Estate planning is personal, and a QTIP trust will not be appropriate for every family. Working with financial, legal, and tax professionals can help ensure that your estate plan reflects your wishes and supports the people who matter most.

The mature plant didn’t grow overnight—it simply had more time. 🌱🍅
Consider two hypothetical investors:
The first begins investing $200 per month at age 18. After 20 years, they stop contributing and allow the account to continue growing until age 65.
The second waits until age 38, then invests $200 per month continuously until age 65.
Assuming a hypothetical 8% annual return:
• The early investor contributes $48,000 and could have approximately $1.01 million at age 65.
• The later investor contributes $64,800 and could have approximately $228,000 at age 65.
The early investor contributed less—but gave the investment 20 additional years to potentially compound.
Starting later doesn’t mean it’s too late. It may mean contributing more, investing longer, or adjusting your goals. What matters is developing a strategy that fits your timeline, needs, and comfort with risk.
Explore your own hypothetical scenario using the SEC’s compound interest calculator:
https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator
This hypothetical illustration assumes $200 monthly contributions made at the end of each month and an 8% annual return compounded monthly. It excludes taxes, fees, withdrawals, and inflation. Returns are not guaranteed, and this example does not represent any specific investment. Investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal. Could you find your most important documents in five minutes?
Wildfire season, severe weather, power outages, and unexpected evacuations are good reminders to make sure your essential information is organized and accessible.
Consider gathering:
• Passports, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and IDs
• Insurance policies and emergency contacts
• Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare documents
• Important records for your children or elderly parents
• Secure access instructions for important digital accounts
• Backups of family photos and other irreplaceable files
Keep physical copies in a secure, fire-resistant container and store protected digital backups in a trusted location. Avoid emailing yourself documents containing passwords or sensitive personal information.
A little preparation today can make a stressful situation easier tomorrow.

You can ask Google a financial question. You can run the numbers through an online calculator. You can even ask AI.
So, why would you still need a financial advisor?
Because your financial life is more than a question and an answer.
It is knowing that you want to travel more in retirement. That you are helping your kids or grandkids. That your monthly expenses have changed. That you are worried about your spouse. Or simply that something in your life feels different than it did six months ago.
Those conversations help put the numbers into context.
At Summit Wealth, we want to know what is happening in your life, because your financial plan should evolve right along with it.

Cybersecurity threats can be scary, especially because scams are getting harder to spot.
Phishing emails, suspicious text messages, fake tech-support calls, and fraudulent requests are often designed to create urgency and get you to act before you have time to think.
A few simple habits can help:
• Pause before clicking unfamiliar links or attachments
• Be cautious when a message creates a sudden sense of urgency
• Use strong, unique passwords
• Enable multi-factor authentication when available
• Never give an unexpected caller remote access to your computer
• If something feels off, verify the request using a trusted phone number or website
At Summit Wealth Management Group, protecting your financial information is an important part of the relationship we have with our clients. If you ever receive a suspicious message involving your accounts, contact us before taking action.

Hotchpot clause. Pumpkin patch. Strange name, important idea.
A hotchpot clause in a trust or estate plan can help address a simple question:
If one child or beneficiary already received significant financial help during your lifetime, should that be taken into account later when the estate is divided?
That could include help with a home purchase, business funding, a large cash gift, or other major financial assistance.
Not every family wants this handled the same way, which is why thoughtful planning matters.
Estate planning is not only about who gets what. It is also about making sure your wishes are clear and your family understands the intent behind the plan.
At Summit Wealth Management Group, we can help you look at the bigger financial picture so you can be better prepared when speaking with your estate-planning attorney.

Am I ready to retire?
Retirement readiness is about more than reaching a certain age or seeing a certain number in your account.
It can help to think about your monthly spending, Social Security and pension income, healthcare costs, investment strategy, and how long your savings may need to last.
Questions worth asking include:
• What will my lifestyle actually cost?
• Where will my retirement income come from?
• How much flexibility do I have for unexpected expenses?
• Are my investments still aligned with my goals and timeline?
At Summit Wealth Management Group, we help clients look at all of these pieces together so retirement decisions can be made with more clarity and confidence.

You may have heard the terms “A Trust” and “B Trust” when discussing estate planning, but what do they actually mean?
In many estate plans for married couples, a trust may divide into two separate trusts after the first spouse passes away.
Trust A is commonly the Survivor’s Trust and generally contains assets for the surviving spouse.
Trust B may be called the Bypass, Family, or Credit Shelter Trust and can be structured to benefit the surviving spouse while preserving assets for other beneficiaries.
A/B trusts have historically been used for estate-tax planning, but they may also help families address questions about control, future beneficiaries, and how assets are ultimately distributed.
Because every trust is written differently, the actual document determines what “A” and “B” mean in your estate plan.
At Summit Wealth Management Group, we can help you review how your financial accounts fit into the larger estate-planning picture and work alongside your estate-planning attorney when appropriate.
