Does the 2026 mileage change mean I need two mileage logs?
You need mileage records that can separate miles driven before July 1, 2026 from miles driven on/after July 1, 2026 if you use the standard mileage rate. The IRS issued revised rates effective July 1, 2026, including 76 cents per mile for business.

Your “monthly close” basics: what to reconcile every month
If you only do one thing consistently, do a monthly close. It keeps your books trustworthy and makes tax planning realistic. A solid monthly close typically includes:

Step-by-step: a simple 30–45 day year-end plan
Week 1: Clean data
Week 2: Forecast and scenario plan
Week 3: Execute the decisions
Week 4–6: Lock in compliance items
For a break down of each week, please visit our article discussing the best ways to plan your year end tax strategies.

When should a business start year-end tax planning?
Ideally 30–90 days before year-end. That window usually provides enough time to close the books, run projections, and implement decisions (purchases, payroll changes, documentation cleanup) before December 31.
Tax planning works best when it’s treated like operations—not a once-a-year paperwork sprint. For small and medium-sized businesses, the highest-impact moves are usually the simplest: clean books, intentional payroll, documented deductions, and timing decisions made before December 31.
What documents should I bring to a tax planning meeting?
Your most recent YTD profit & loss, balance sheet, payroll reports, details on large expected invoices/expenses, and a list of major planned purchases. If you have multiple entities or states, include entity/org details and nexus/state activity notes.

Personal (1040) and Corporate Extensions (1120)
Did you file an extension for your 2025 personal and corporate return? If you did, the filing deadline for any 1040 or 1120 is approaching quickly! Per the IRS, the extension deadline for C-Corps and Personal tax returns is October, 15 2026.
Even if you filed an extension with a different firm, JTC CPAs can take over and get your personal or corporate return filed by the extension deadline. As always, it is completely free to reach out for a consultation with one of our qualified tax liaisons. They will sit down with you and review your unique tax situation to see the best way to move forward in preparing your 2025 return.

Did you Know? Quick Tax Prep Facts
An extension gives you more time to file, but the IRS still expects timely payment by the original due date.
Estimated tax due dates aren’t evenly spaced—missing one quarter can create penalties even if you “catch up” later.
The IRS publishes annual tax calendars (Publication 509) that are useful for owners managing multiple compliance obligations.

Step-by-step: turn tax topics into a monthly routine (without living in QuickBooks)
If you’re a busy owner (or you lead a small finance team), the goal isn’t to memorize tax rules—it’s to build a repeatable workflow so decisions happen before deadlines.
Step 1: Lock in your month-end close cadence
Step 2: Do a 20-minute tax-risk scan
Step 3: Forecast “taxable income,” not just revenue
Step 4: Schedule deadlines like a payroll system—not a reminder note
Want this to feel lighter? Many owners offload the repetitive parts—bookkeeping cleanup, payroll processing, and estimated tax planning—so they can focus on revenue, delivery, and hiring. If you’re building that kind of system, start with bookkeeping support from JTC CPAs.
