Louisiana estate planning, incapacity planning, successions, estate disputes, litigation, and appeals. Most estate problems are not drafting problems.
Based in Baton Rouge, serving clients statewide and out-of-state families with Louisiana estate matters. Field Law focuses on Louisiana estate planning, successions, and succession litigation. We help clients get estate plans done right, transfer property after a death, and resolve disputes when estates become complicated. They are fact problems—unclear assets, missing information, blended families, or assumptions about how Louisiana law works. Our approach is structured and practical: identify the right process early, keep matters organized, and move things forward efficiently. We regularly handle both uncontested and contested successions, including will contests, heirship disputes, and recovery of estate assets. That experience informs how we approach estate planning—building plans that are designed to work when they are actually needed. Whether planning ahead or dealing with a succession, the goal is the same: get it done right, without unnecessary delay or confusion.

An error in a succession judgment does not necessarily mean the title can still be challenged.
In Windward Land v. Mann, the Louisiana Supreme Court applied a two-year prescription to a challenge involving inherited land and competing chains of title. The ruling protects certain acquisitions for value; it does not make every succession judgment immune from challenge.
Our new article explains both opinions, the statutory requirements, and what the decision means for heirs, purchasers, and partition disputes.

If you want the family home to stay in the family, begin with a conversation about what that would require.
Would your children want to keep it? Could they afford the expenses? Would anyone live there? What would happen if one wanted to sell?
Bring those answers into your estate-planning discussion. Your wishes matter, and so do the practical circumstances of the people who would carry them out.
Field Law helps Louisiana families plan for the property and responsibilities they leave behind.

Leaving the family home to your children also leaves them decisions to make.
Will they keep it, rent it, or sell it? Who will pay insurance, property taxes, utilities, and repairs while they decide? If one child wants to stay and another wants to sell, is a buyout financially realistic?
A recent Washington Post article by Alicia Adamczyk explores the financial and emotional challenges that can accompany an inherited home.
For Louisiana families, these are useful questions to bring into an estate-planning conversation. Consider who should receive the property, what keeping it would cost, and whether the intended arrangement is workable for the people involved.
Start with a practical question: “If you inherited this house together, what would you want to happen?”

Why inheriting a home can be more costly than anybody imagines Younger generations are set to inherit record home wealth. That property could come with unexpected financial and emotional challenges.

A judgment of possession can feel like a final step, yet Louisiana law recognizes that families sometimes discover new property or information after a succession has already technically closed for good. Baton Rouge families can see exactly how that process works at https://www.fieldlawllc.com/blog/reopen-louisiana-succession-after-judgment-possession/

“Probate” and “succession” are often used interchangeably, but Louisiana uses succession to describe the legal process of settling an estate after someone dies.
