It’s November, which means it’s time to celebrate my mom’s birthday.

The bakery is dedicated to my dad year-round, but twice a year I get to honor her with her favorite pâte à choux treats—chocolate éclairs or vanilla cream puffs.

This year, for her 85th birthday, she chose vanilla cream puffs… and she asked me to share them with you.

Today is our 6th anniversary!

Five years may be a celebrated milestone for a small business, but I believe every year is worth celebrating. At a time when so many small bakeries have had to close their doors, I don’t take a single order—or another year of baking for you—for granted.

Joe’s Bakery Baton Rouge began during a season of compounded grief. After losing my dad in 2018, the pandemic brought another kind of heartbreak: missing my only child’s high school graduation because of the shutdown, all while still grieving the loss of my dad. I needed a way to cope with everything I was feeling.

It was my daughter who encouraged me to finally pursue a childhood dream. The idea to name the bakery after my dad was hers, too, and together we set out with a menu that included just about everything except cakes!

A few years later, as she graduated from college and went off to pursue her own dreams, I began narrowing the menu to what it is today: pies, pie bars, and a few specialty items. The business has evolved, just as life has, but the heart behind it has never changed.

Baking became an outlet for the feelings I couldn’t always put into words. Whether I’m mixing batter, baking a pie, or preparing for an event, each has become a small act of healing. Grief still catches me by surprise, but creating something to share with others quiets my mind and brings peace to my soul.

Bringing a little happiness to your day, one bite at a time, remains at the heart of everything I do.

If you’ve ever placed an order, shared a post, or recommended us to someone, you’ve helped keep this small business—and a living tribute to my dad—alive. That means more to me than you may ever know.

Six years of baking, healing, learning, growing, and sharing a little piece of my heart with you. I’m incredibly grateful you’re here, and I look forward to seeing what the next year brings. Thank you for being part of my story.
