The DNA for the Company was identified some time before we settled on the name of the company โ we wanted a purpose to anchor what we are doing. Without this all-important desire, we will not have started at all. We want to maximise the potential of the lives of those people who come to us by being the place where people can come to learn and grow to be a better person or to be better in what they do. Through education, training and other forms of services, we hope to equip them with knowledge and skills to better able to dealing with life and family challenges, and to be more effective and productive at work.
โOregoโ, the name chosen to be our Company name, aptly reflects our belief. Orego is the Greek word for โaspireโ. It means to โeagerly desire to accomplish some goal or purpose; to strive to attain, to aspire to, to eagerly long forโ. We want to impart to people a sense of being Restored, Encouraged and Enabled.

Sometimes, people who experience family violence don't need us to have all the answers. They need to know they can speak without fear of being judged, blamed, or dismissed.
A safe space begins when we listen patiently, respect their feelings, and allow them to share at their own pace.
As this reminder from our training highlights, โWe need to provide a safe place ... for them to be supported emotionally.โ
๐ You may not be able to change their situation overnight, but your compassion can help them feel less alone.

Imagine someone finally gathers the courage to tell you that they are experiencing abuse. It may have taken them a long time to speak up, and they may already be questioning themselves.
Now imagine their first response is, โWhat did you do to make them angry?โ
Instead of feeling supported, they may feel blamed all over again.
Remember, nothing someone does or says justifies abuse. Sometimes, the most meaningful words we can offer are simply: โI believe you. I'm here to support you.โ๐
Let's be the person who listens without judgment.

Have you ever wondered why someone stays in a relationship that hurts them?
From the outside, leaving may seem like the obvious choice. But imagine worrying about where you will live, how you will support your children, or what might happen if you try to leave. Perhaps, a part of you still hopes the person you love will change.
For someone experiencing family violence, leaving isn't always simpleโor safe.
๐ Instead of asking, *โWhy don't they just leave?โ* perhaps we can ask, *โHow can I support them?โ*
Sometimes, understanding begins when we choose empathy over judgment.

Imagine David asking to use his own money, but his son controls the bank account and decides whenโand how muchโDavid can access.
At first, someone might think, โMaybe his son is just helping him manage his finances.โ But what if David is no longer allowed to make decisions about his own money?
That is where we need to pause and look at the pattern of control, not just the situation itself.
๐ญ What do you notice in Davidโs situation?

Sometimes, after an abusive incident, we hear things like:
An apology can be meaningfulโbut it doesn't erase the harm that happened.
As Winnie Chng, trainer of โSupporting Adult Victims of Family Violence,โ reminds us: nothing justifies abuse.
This doesn't mean every difficult moment in a relationship is abuse. It means we should be careful not to let apologies, explanations, or promises make us overlook a harmful pattern.
When supporting someone experiencing family violence, the goal isn't to judge their choices. It's to listen, notice, and help them feel safe enough to seek support.
Sometimes awareness begins with simply taking someone's experience seriously. ๐

Sometimes, family situations can look completely ordinary from the outsideโa parent asking for money, an adult child holding a bank card, or one family member handling the finances.
But itโs worth pausing and asking: Who actually has access to the money, and who has control over it?
If an older person is being prevented from accessing or making decisions about their own financial resources, this may be a sign of economic abuse.
The goal isnโt to jump to conclusions from one picture. Itโs to learn to notice the signs, ask respectful questions, and stay aware of situations where someone may be losing control over their own resources.
Sometimes, awareness begins with simply asking:
โWhat do you notice?โ ๐

Sometimes, when we hear that someone is staying in a harmful relationship, our first reaction might be, โWhy donโt you just leave?โ
But leaving is rarely that simple. There may be fear, threats, financial difficulties, children to consider, past experiences, or other reasons we cannot see from the outside.
Instead of rushing to judge, we can slow down and ask: โWhat makes it difficult for you to leave right now?โ
That small change in how we respond can create space for someone to feel heard, understood, and supported. ๐

Family violence is not always easy to see. Sometimes it appears through words, fear, intimidation, or control over money and resources. What matters is recognising the pattern behind these behavioursโ**power and control**โand understanding that harm can take many forms, not just physical ones.
