Kirio dancers from Malaita Province consist exclusively of women.
We have followed their performances at weddings and other major events, but today we had the opportunity to capture their portraits—and they were beautiful.
What makes them stand out from other dancing groups are their authentic dolphin-tooth shell-money costumes. These women come from Fanalei and Walande. In Malaita Province, *Kirio* means “dolphin.”
The communities these women come from also have strong traditional ties to dolphin calling, which takes place once a year. It is a traditional event that we are very interested in documenting someday.
