EFFECT OF BETEL NUT ON THE HEART

A week ago, I lost a mother of mine from what is presumed a heart attack after chewing betel nut and I'm compelled to write about this paradoxical effect of the betel nut (araca nut) as an awareness.

This message can be disseminated. I have seen individuals brought into the emergency department to be confirmed death on arrival with betel nut in their mouth. All their story is similar in that individuals are known to be in good health before they have a sudden collapse from heart attack.

The chemical aracholine in the aracanut has a euphoric effect which we all know. The blood vessels in our body have certain receptors for chemicals to attach and initiate their effect.

The aracholine causes wide spread widening of blood vessels thereby increasing blood flow to brain and rest of the body. This effect generally gives the euphoria (good feeling). The increase in blood flow causes increase heart rate (beat), and increase cardiac output and may transiently increase blood pressure.

Mouth cancer from betel nut chewing with Lime (calcium hydroxide), I believe Is a well-known phenomenon, however, ignorance is our biggest obstacle to fight this deadly disease.

There are other harmful effects that most of us not aware of. One of such is Paradoxical effect on the heart. The chemical receptors on the coronary arteries (two main blood vessels) supplying the heart muscle are different from the rest of the body, therefore the effect of aracholine on the heart is different to other organs. Instead of vasodilation (widen blood vessels) to increase flow, it vasoconstricts (narrows the lumen of arteries) the coronary arteries, thereby decreasing the blood flow to heart itself.

Depending on how powerful the effect is, it may transiently occlude the lumen completely, which may clinically present as chest pain, during chewing.

Those greatest at risk of heart attack from chewing betelnut are individuals with coronary artery diseases or for that matter any heart problem patient. Also, those at risk are elderly and cigarette smokers.

Papua New Guinea is now experiencing life style diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, obesity (fat) at an alarming rate. A setback, passive culture with no discipline in our diet and lack of regular exercise is a recipe for all of the above. Cigarette smoking is a single known risk factor for heart attack.
If you are a person who is smoking, chewing, overweight and malnourished you are at risk of sudden death.

The misconception of chewing BETEL NUT only without lime to clean teeth and strengthen gum must now be cleared. You are at risk of heart attack because Chemical aracholine in the NUT. With lime it propels to mouth cancer formation.

H.Pylori and Stomach Ulcers.
