Convex Accounting
Not your regular, grey-haired business advisor and chartered accountant. Like the dodo, they're slowly becoming extinct.
We make things happen and help people grow their businesses. We do this by making tax compliance simple, putting you back in control of your accounts. We can also help in other areas you might not expect us to (like financial coaching) so that you can earn more, spend less or retire earlier. All advice we give is proactive, useful and jargon-free. It’s also quick, pragmatic and goes beyond the usual (historian-like) accounting information.

🚀 Hitting 10–20 staff? That’s when the cracks start to show.
Processes that worked with 5 people suddenly break. Payroll turns into chaos, invoices get delayed, jobs slip, and owners end up firefighting instead of leading.
The fix isn’t more people — it’s better processes. From zero-touch bookkeeping to Xero Tap to Pay, from workflow in Projectworks to reporting with your chartered accountant, getting this stuff right is what unlocks the next stage of growth.
We’ve written about the 5 processes every 10–20 person business has to nail

Growth pains at 10–20 staff? It’s probably process, not people.
At this stage of business, every process — HR, productivity, profit — shows up in the P&L. The trap is thinking process = a checklist and leaving staff to it.
In reality, it’s about:
✅ The right steps
✅ The right person doing those steps
✅ The right systems to support them
For example, workflow management at Convex is critical. Jobs out on time = happy clients + faster billing = better cashflow. For most firms our size, that efficiency gain is worth $90–100k a year in extra FTE. For us, it takes 20 minutes a week.
Process improvement isn’t about squeezing people to go faster. It’s about:
✅ Understanding the outcome
✅ Automating what you can
✅ Assigning work to the right people
✅ Testing and refining
For 10–20 FTE firms, fixing process is what unlocks the next stage of growth.
👉 If you’re feeling stuck at this stage, maybe it’s time to talk about process.

🚨 Cash Today, Tax Debt Tomorrow 🚨
IRD is chasing $9.3 billion in overdue tax.
But fewer than 20 businesses have had their debts flagged with credit agencies over the past seven years.
That slow response? It’s a double-edged sword.
✅ It gives breathing room to those doing it tough.
🚧 But it can also mean tax debt quietly snowballs in the background—especially when finance for vehicles or equipment is easier to access than help from IRD.
💸 Fast funding now
📉 Bigger tax hole later
🔁 And the stress keeps mounting
We get it—sometimes you need to grab that opportunity while it’s there. But if you're juggling repayments and a growing tax bill, you're not alone—and there are ways to get ahead of it.
Let’s talk before IRD does.

📢 Important reminder for company directors! ⚖️
This recent High Court decision reinforces that directors can be held personally liable for company debts when trading recklessly—especially if you're managing businesses with tight margins or international complexities.
It's essential to understand your responsibilities as a director. Reckless trading isn't just bad business; it's a legal issue that can hit your personal finances hard.

Confidence is a funny thing - sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down, and sometimes the headlines can’t even decide which way it’s going!
Yesterday from the Herald: “NZ business confidence was mixed in June”
Today from the Herald: “Business confidence up for the first time in three months after tariff turmoil”
Here’s the thing: confidence is as much about mindset as it is about numbers. If you believe things will work out (and back yourself with some smart action), that optimism can be self-fulfilling. Equally, don’t get too high on the hype or too low on the doom and gloom - no one headline defines your business or your future.
Steady heads, open minds, and a bit of healthy scepticism—that’s how you get through the noise.
