Another major project underway for DRDC, and one we’re extremely proud to have secured.

This contract involves some serious civil infrastructure work, with the team working in trenches approaching 3 metres deep and dealing with all the challenges that come with working around existing underground services. The next phase will see us move out into the carriageway to install around 200 metres of 125mm water main and 225mm stormwater main.

For me personally, this project has also been a bit of a milestone.

This is one of the first big projects where I haven’t been personally involved on the tools every day. For a long time, I thought I had to be there doing the work myself to make sure everything was done right.

But I’ve got to say, I’m extremely proud of our team.

The leadership from our senior guys and the effort from our younger guys has been awesome to watch. They’ve absolutely smashed out some challenging work, including trenching down to nearly 3 metres deep — the sort of work I once struggled to trust anyone else to take on without me being there.

Well, they’ve certainly shown me what they’ve got.

Seeing the quality of work they’re producing and the way they’re stepping up gives me a lot of confidence in where DRDC is heading. The future is looking strong with the team we have coming through.

It’s also pretty awesome standing back and seeing all our machinery lined up in photos like these. A big thanks to Aoraki for taking the photos and capturing the job.

There’s still plenty of work ahead as we move into the next phase, but judging by what the team has achieved so far, they’re more than ready for it.

Great job, team. Keep smashing it. 👏

And a special thanks to our General Manager, Jessica Crooks, for everything she does behind the scenes to keep the company, the team and our projects moving forward.

Very proud of what this team is achieving. 💪

A few more water connections completed over the last week 💧🔧

We’ve had a good mix of work across the Wellington region:

💧 A new 25mm connection off a 250mm PE water main in Upper Hutt.

💧 Another 25mm connection off a 150mm asbestos-cement water main, with the added challenge of working underneath existing power cables.

🔧 And check out the previous repair to the stormwater drain… have a guess who’s been there before us! 😂

💧 We also completed a 100mm connection for a new water main that’s been installed in Wadestown for Wellington Water.

The existing main in Wadestown is around 110 years old and, considering its age, is still in surprisingly good condition.

Another good week of water work for the DRDC team — old infrastructure, new infrastructure and plenty of underground services to work around.

A nice day for a walk around Wadestown, delivering water shutdown letters to residents ahead of an upcoming shutdown for a new watermain project for Tiaki Wai

Not a bad place to be working on a sunny Wellington day — some beautiful views around the area while getting everyone notified and prepared for the upcoming works.

Days like this remind you how lucky we are to live and work in Wellington. ☀️💧

Another successful watermain project completed by the DRDC team at Farmer Crescent, Lower Hutt.

The existing watermain was approximately 80 years old and constructed from concrete-lined steel. It was very shallow, and the new driveway infrastructure for the development would have conflicted with it.

DRDC replaced approximately 40 metres of the existing main with new 125 mm HDPE pipe. This was the first project where our team completed all the butt welding ourselves, and every weld passed inspection and testing.

We also installed new water connections for the existing houses and a new 50 mm main connection to supply the development.

The tie-ins required a specially fabricated steel bend, so a big thank you to the wizards at Hutt Valley Welding for producing exactly what we needed.

The shutdown lasted approximately seven hours and was completed in some very unfavourable weather conditions. A medical centre within the shutdown area needed to maintain its water supply, so we developed a temporary solution to feed it from the neighbouring development that we had connected the previous week.

A great result from the entire team—careful planning, quality workmanship and another challenging watermain project completed successfully.
