Connecting Leaders, Strengthening Communities ☕️
Last Friday, we brought together community sport and recreation leaders from across Tāmaki Makaurau and Counties Manukau for our Toshiba Sport & Recreation Leaders Network Breakfast, proudly hosted by Bruce Pulman Park at Pulman Lodge.
❤️ We began our morning acknowledging the recent passing of our dear colleague Patariki Spellman, whose absence was deeply felt after joining us at many past breakfasts. Through his mahi and gift for storytelling at CLM Community Sport, Pat celebrated the people and spirit of community sport across Counties Manukau. Gone far too soon, but leaving a lasting legacy in the communities and lives he touched. ❤️
As we reflected on the importance of connection, the morning continued with the sharing of some special sector updates:
🏆 A special appearance from the iconic Ranfurly Shield! Huge thanks to Chad Shepherd, CEO of Counties Manukau Rugby, for bringing along this treasured piece of rugby history and sharing what the Shield means to our community.
👏 Jerome Mika, Director of Business Development & Partnerships, welcomed us on behalf of Bruce Pulman Park, sharing a few words and an exciting “hint” of what’s ahead for the park!
💬 Martin Devoy (Auckland Council) and Jamie Archibald (Aktive) provided valuable sector updates from across Tāmaki Makaurau, keeping our leaders informed and connected.
Ngā mihi nui to Toshiba and Foundation North for their continued support of this network and mahi, helping us build a stronger, more connected community of sport and recreation leaders serving South Auckland. 🙏🏼
Because when our leaders connect, share and collaborate, our communities are stronger for it!

🇫🇯 Celebrating Fijian Language Week – Macawa ni Vosa vakaViti! 🇫🇯
Today our CLM Community Sport whānau celebrated Fijian Language Week with a beautiful cultural lunch lovingly prepared by our very own Vanessa Kubuabola and Leah Thorby. Vinaka vakalevu! 🇫🇯👏
A bittersweet occasion as we remember our dear friend Patariki Spellman who passed away earlier this week ❤️
During his 3.5 years with us, one of the things Pat was instrumental in was making Language Week shared lunches an annual tradition. He was always the one behind the camera, capturing the laughter, culture and special moments that brought our team together, and partaking in the feast 😊
While this week has been hard on the team, we know if Pat were here today, he would have been incredibly proud of Vanessa and Leah for keeping this tradition alive! And very impressed with the Indian treats provided by Ash!
Every Language Week celebration will forever remind us of Pat and the special legacy he leaves behind amongst everything else he has done in the community 🕊️
Moe mai rā, Pat ❤️

Our CLM Community Sport whānau is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Pat.
Pat served his community with incredible passion, generosity and heart. Through his love of touch and his many years of mahi across community sport in Counties Manukau, he touched the lives of so many people.
It is hard to find words that could adequately describe the impact you made, Pat, or the loss that will be felt across our team and across our community. Your contribution, your presence and the connections you created will not be forgotten.
Our deepest aroha and condolences go to Pat’s whānau, friends and all those who knew and loved him during this incredibly sad time.
Moe mai rā, Pat. Rest in peace. 🕊️
Ka rere te korimako i te rangi pōkēao
Kua kāpō ōna karu i a Hinekohu
It is with immense sadness that we acknowledge the sudden passing of Pat Spellman. A treasured and much-loved member of the Touch community, who dedicated years towards the growth and success of Pacific Cup Touch, Māori Touch NZ and Touch New Zealand
A trusted friend and mentor, and a tireless advocate for the touch community – his mahi will leave an everlasting legacy in Aotearoa and across the Pacific. An irreplaceable figure who will be dearly missed.
Tangi arrangements are still to be finalised, and information will be shared in due course. The whānau request privacy at this time, and ask that any enquiries be directed to Harley Wall on 021 1187706 or via messenger.

🚲 Adaptive Wheels, Active Lives at Rosehill Special School 🚲
With Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa funding and support from Healthy Active Learning Advisor Tracey-Lee Dalton, students at Rosehill Special School are experiencing the freedom, independence, and joy of cycling through the Adaptive Wheels, Active Lives programme.
The addition of a Rifton adaptive tricycle and a VeloPlus wheelchair transport e-bike has opened up new opportunities for students to build strength, improve mobility, and participate in activities that were once out of reach. For some learners, these adaptive bikes have been truly life-changing, giving them the opportunity to ride independently and experience important milestones alongside their peers.
The impact extends far beyond physical activity. Students who may previously have watched from the sidelines are now active participants in whole-school cycling activities, strengthening their sense of belonging, confidence, and connection. The VeloPlus also enables students who use wheelchairs to safely explore their community and enjoy experiences that many of us take for granted.
💬 "These interventions are very special and not always easy to report on, but I can honestly say they are very much appreciated, eye-opening to some whānau and very fun and inclusive for our students."
– Gavin O'Brien, Physiotherapist, Rosehill Special School
💬 "Thank you for the trike you funded for Rosehill Special School... our little dude has benefitted in great ways with his lower leg strength and his co-ordination. He's at risk of losing his ability to walk, so whatever physical activities he can participate in means the world to us. So grateful for what you guys contribute to the lives of our superheroes."
– Rosehill Special School Parent
This is inclusion in action. By removing barriers and creating opportunities to move, participate, and thrive, Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa is helping more tamariki and rangatahi experience the benefits of being active, connected, and included.
A huge thank you to everyone who helps make these opportunities possible for young people and whānau across our communities 🥰

💥 Strengthening Secondary School Sport across South Auckland 💥
A few weeks ago, our Regional Sports Director Junior Manapori joined 30 Secondary School Sport staff from across 15 Schools in Counties Manukau at the 2026 Secondary School Sport Conference held in Wellington
Across two days, the conference explored how to create a more connected, sustainable and effective school sport system that puts rangatahi at the centre.
Key themes included the importance of student voice, strong leadership, collaboration, sustainable support for school sport coordinators, and recognising the wider role sport plays in belonging, wellbeing and connection.
It was a valuable opportunity for our team to connect, learn and bring fresh thinking back to support secondary school sport across Counties Manukau.
Ngā mihi nui to the Regional Sport Directors, School Sport NZ, speakers and sector partners who helped make the conference possible 💙
