Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWOA) governing council member, Professor Jacinta Ruru told graduates they had achieved more than a qualification at this year's He Puāwaitanga (graduation) ceremony.
Professor Ruru, who represented Te Mana Whakahaere (the governing council of TWOA), is a long-serving Professor of Law at the University of Otago, New Zealand's first Māori Professor of Law, and a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori and legal education.
Addressing graduates and their supporters at SIT Hansen Hall on 5th September, Professor Ruru said their graduation marked a significant milestone, representing countless hours of learning, perseverance, determination, and sacrifice. “It reflects the courage to begin something new, the commitment to continue when challenges arose, and the resilience to see your journey through to completion."

For many Southlanders, the path into education, training or employment is not always straightforward. The Kia Tū Pathway Planning programme is helping change that by giving people the confidence, guidance and support to explore their strengths, identify opportunities and take positive steps towards the future.
Kia Tū helps connect learners with practical experiences and real opportunities across Murihiku Southland, giving them a clearer view of where their next steps could lead.
The programme’s strength lies in its collaborative approach, bringing together local leadership, cultural connection and community knowledge of Hokonui Runanga Inc through Murihiku Regeneration and the Anamata Māia service, with SIT providing education pathways, learning support and opportunities for further study. It’s also supported by the Ministry of Social Development NZ (MSD), local employers and community organisations.
