🌊 What does Pacific-led climate action look like? SPC’s Climate Change Flagship (CCF) brings together expertise in climate science, covering all sustainable development sectors to support Pacific Island countries and territories.
The 2025 Results Report and 2023–2025 Snapshot are out now. In 2025, SPC’s CCF work reached or benefited at least 12,607 people. Seven countries and territories received support to strengthen their national climate plans: Niue 🇳🇺, Tuvalu 🇹🇻, FSM 🇫🇲, Solomon Islands 🇸🇧, New Caledonia 🇳🇨, French Polynesia 🇵🇫 and Vanuatu 🇻🇺.

Across 2023–2025, the CCF produced 1,270+ knowledge and scientific products. Approved and pipeline projects are projected to benefit 2.73 million people by 2035.

🤝 Supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade with additional support from Green Climate Fund Adaptation Fund, Bezos Earth Fund Global Environment Facility, Government of Denmark, Australian Government through Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, and the UK through Regional Pacific NDC Hub resources.

Last week, the SPC team joined students at The University of the South Pacific (USP) Careers Fair at the Laucala Bay Campus, in Fiji 🇫🇯, for conversations, connections and a little fun along the way!

Students had the opportunity to learn more about SPC, explore career pathways and discover how their studies, skills and aspirations can contribute to the work we do across the Pacific. From engaging conversations to interactive activities and prizes, it was a great opportunity to connect with our future Pacific professionals.

As a member-owned and member-led organisation, SPC is committed to supporting the people and talent who will help shape the future of our Blue Pacific.

👉 To all the students who stopped by, we look forward to seeing where your journeys take you.

🌧️ With below-normal rainfall expected to continue, crop choices matter more than ever.

🌾Hardy, fast-maturing varieties and smart water management help safeguard production through the driest stretch, keeping food and income flowing for farming families.

🐟 Fish inspectors from across the Pacific are building their skills to help Pacific tuna exports meet the European Union's (EU) seafood requirements.

The training covers key areas including EU regulations, EU market access, the organisation and structure of national competent authorities, roles and responsibilities, ethics, competencies, national control plans and industry standards, HACCP vessel, audit and inspections, risk assessment, auditing supply chains, microbiology for non microbiologists, processing technology, traceability and certification.

📢 According to FFA Market Access Specialist, Jope Tamani, “It is about making sure officers have the knowledge and competencies to carry out their responsibilities and help Pacific countries respond to changing market requirements.”

The PEUMP II programme (2026 – 2030) is funded by the European Union in the Pacific and is implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC), the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, FFA, and the The University of the South Pacific in close collaboration with the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, Non-Government Organisations and the national authorities.

“Climate change has many stories.”

For young people in Fiji, data offers a way to understand some of those stories and communicate what climate change means for Pacific communities.

The Pacific Dataviz Challenge is an SPC-led initiative that brings together science, creativity and storytelling. Through the Challenge, people of different ages and backgrounds use open data from the Pacific Data Hub to explore issues shaping the region, build practical skills and share Pacific perspectives.

▶️ In this video, students from Fiji explain why data matters to them, and how it can help make complex issues easier to understand.

This Thursday, we will reveal the winners of the 2026 Challenge. Join us at USP Suva or online to celebrate the participants and see their climate data stories.

🇵🇫 🍊 Three islands in French Polynesia have shown that fast, coordinated action can stop a dangerous citrus disease. Citrus tristeza virus can seriously damage citrus trees. Once it was detected, teams carried out widespread testing, stopped the movement of plant material and removed infected plants.

📊 What made the response work:
🧪 Large-scale sampling and immuno-printing were used to find infected plants
🚫 Plant material could not be moved into or out of affected islands
🌳 Infected plants were removed
✅ After 12 months, no positive samples were found, and later surveys confirmed the result

The success provides a useful example for other islands: early detection, quarantine, coordinated action and continued monitoring can protect crops and livelihoods.

In the Pacific Ocean, yellowfin tuna catch increased from 526,609 tonnes in 2002 to 751,822 tonnes in 2021, around 43%, highlighting the growing importance of fisheries across the region. 🐟

Our stat of the week reminds us of the vital role the ocean plays in Pacific livelihoods, and the need to manage marine resources sustainably to protect ecosystems and ensure long-term food security.

| We had a full house with more than 300 people attending the exclusive screening of 'Remathau: People of the Ocean' yesterday evening at the Japan Pacific ICT Theatre, USP Laucala Campus, in Suva, Fiji, as part of the 6th Pacific Human Rights Film Festival.

🎞️ The documentary follows Nicole Yamase, a young marine biologist from Micronesia, on her inspiring journey to the ocean's deepest depths. Through her historic dive, she embarks on a deeper journey of self-discovery, reconnecting with her people's remarkable resilience and deep oceanic heritage.

🎤 After the film, Nicole Yamase, and Remathau film maker Daniel H. Lin joined online to discuss the film with audience members. Two USP students, Cathleen Mudong from the Federated States of Micronesia and Samuel J Barton from the Marshall Islands were also panellists for the post screening discussion.
