Passion and expertise can launch a business. Growing it takes management skills, financial discipline, and a network.

Across much of Africa, official business is conducted in English, French, Portuguese, or Arabic, a legacy of the continent's colonial history that continues to shape recruitment, contracts, and everyday corporate communication.

It is tempting, then, for job seekers and even relocating professionals to assume that fluency in one of these official languages is enough to thrive in any African market. In practice, however, the ability to understand or speak a local language, even at a basic level, often makes the difference between being seen as an outsider and being seen as someone who genuinely belongs.

This is particularly true for candidates applying to roles in a different African country or region than their own.

Investing time in learning even a handful of local phrases, along with a genuine curiosity about regional customs, is rarely wasted. It signals adaptability, humility, and long-term intent, three qualities that matter enormously to employers building teams meant to last across the continent.

Have you ever had to adapt your communication style to fit a new cultural or linguistic context at work?

What happens to your organisation the day your top performer resigns without notice?
Succession planning is a survival strategy for any business that wants to outlast its founders and its stars.

Here is what a resilient succession plan requires:
🔴 Identify critical roles. Map out the positions whose sudden vacancy would disrupt operations, not just titles at the top.

🔴 Develop internal talent early. Give high-potential employees stretch assignments and mentorship long before a vacancy appears.

🔴 Document institutional knowledge. Processes and client relationships should live in systems, not only in one person's head.

🔴 Review the plan regularly. A succession plan drafted once and forgotten is nearly as risky as having none at all.

Organisations that plan for continuity protect not only their operations, but the confidence of their clients and investors.

As the third quarter closes, most organisations are already looking ahead to the final stretch of the year, but this transition is exactly the moment when a proper KPI review carries the most value.

A quarter-end review is an exercise in confirming whether targets were met or missed. It is also an opportunity to understand why certain results happened, which external factors played a role, and which internal decisions genuinely moved the needle.

Teams that treat this review superficially often carry the same blind spots into the next quarter, repeating avoidable mistakes or missing signals that were already visible in the data.

A meaningful review connects individual and team performance back to the organisation's broader strategic objectives, and asks an honest question: are the indicators being tracked still the right ones, or have priorities shifted enough that the KPIs themselves need to evolve?

Closing out the third quarter with clarity and honesty sets the tone for a stronger, more focused final quarter, rather than a rushed scramble to hit year-end numbers.

How does your organisation approach its quarterly performance reviews?

In 2006, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Liberia's president and, in doing so, the first woman ever elected to lead a nation on the African continent.

Her presidency arrived at a critical moment, as Liberia emerged from years of civil war, and her leadership became closely associated with reconstruction, reconciliation, and a determined effort to rebuild trust in public institutions.

Sirleaf's story continues to resonate well beyond Liberia's borders. It stands as a reminder that access to the highest levels of leadership should be defined by competence and vision rather than gender, and that representation at the top changes what an entire generation believes is possible for itself.

Across the continent today, more women are stepping into ministerial roles, corporate boardrooms, and senior public office, often citing leaders like Sirleaf as early proof that the path exists.

Real progress, however, is not measured only by the presence of women in visible positions, but by whether organisations actively build the pipelines, mentorship, and equal opportunity structures that allow more women to reach them.

What is your organisation doing to actively support the advancement of women into senior leadership roles?
