🌟 𝗜𝗹-𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗷𝗮 commemorates important victories in Malta’s history, most famously the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟱𝟲𝟱, when the Knights of St John and the Maltese successfully defended the islands against the Ottoman invasion.

It also commemorates the end of the 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗱𝗲 in 1800 and Malta’s victory during the 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗿 in 1943.

🙏 At the same time, 𝟴 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝘆 — 𝗶𝗹-𝗕𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮, celebrating the birth of the Virgin Mary.

And today, four localities celebrate their main festa dedicated to 𝗜𝗹-𝗕𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮:

In 1942, Malta was under siege and desperately short of food, fuel and essential supplies. Operation Pedestal, better known locally as the Santa Marija Convoy, was launched to bring vital supplies to the island.

At the heart of the story was the American-built tanker SS Ohio, carrying desperately needed fuel. After being repeatedly attacked and severely damaged, Ohio managed to reach the Grand Harbour on 15 August 1942, supported by Royal Navy destroyers.

Only five of the fourteen merchant ships reached Malta. The supplies that made it through helped Malta avoid the threat of surrender and continue its resistance.

More than 80 years later, the arrival of the Santa Marija Convoy remains a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice and resilience in Maltese history. 🇲🇹❤️
