Mali Mystere Expeditions Is offering you now the possibility to visit Ethiopia.
We are happy to share with you some beautiful pictures and historical view of Lalibella : King Lalibela in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. He belonged to the Zagwe dynasty, which ruled parts of Ethiopia after the decline of the Aksumite Empire.

According to tradition, King Lalibela wanted to create a “New Jerusalem” in Ethiopia after Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land became difficult due to regional conflicts. His vision led to the construction of a sacred city carved directly out of solid rock.

Lalibela is best known for its 11 monolithic churches, carved downward into the earth rather than built upward. These churches are grouped into two main clusters connected by tunnels and trenches.

The most famous is Church of Saint George (Bete Giyorgis), shaped like a cross and considered one of the greatest achievements of medieval engineering.

These churches were not only places of worship but also symbols of faith, resilience, and national identity. 🇪🇹
