Slaps St. Lucia Animal Protection Society

You may recall that on the day of the August SLAPS quiz we rescued five kittens that had been dumped in a garbage bin. One has since passed but the remaining four have now been joined by another five kittens found in the same bin this last week. They are lucky to have been discovered. We thank the gentleman who attended the September quiz and has responded positively to our plea for adopters. But we still need more good homes for these precious little ones.

The quiz took place on 1st September so we commenced with a round on Firsts. Sample question: Who was the first US astronaut to walk on the moon? (See below for the answer.)

The second round was about South America. Well done to Team Six on the Beach who answered all questions correctly and scored the only ‘10’ of the night. Can you state what the cowboys of Argentina are known as?

Then came a round on rodents. What is the largest species of rodent in the world?

Our final text round was about hair. Example question: Which haircut has been described as “Business in the front, party in the back”?

Congratulations to the winning team, Six on the Beach. They were happy to each receive a bottle of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.

As usual, quizmaster Vince did a grand job, as did Junior and the staff at the Yacht Club. And we like to give credit to the SLAPS volunteers who compiled and organised the quiz.

We finish with a story about a rescued stray German Shepherd who had wounds. Your donations enabled us to pay for Tyr’s treatment by a vet. SLAPS no longer has a facility to house dogs but one of the volunteers was able to then look after him for a few days. We thank the person who attended the quiz and has agreed to foster Tyr until we can find him a permanent home. Please let us know if you are interested in adopting this lovely boy or any of the kittens. By the way, Tyr’s name is from the Norse god of courage. So many animals suffer yet show resilience. Thank you for helping us to care for them.

Get ready to ride on August 4th!

Three of these little cuties are looking to hitch a ride in-cabin to Toronto. Their owner has recently died after rescuing a great many animals over her long life here in St Lucia. These little dogs need to get to their new lives as soon as possible. Anyone flying to Toronto willing to es**rt them please? They are so lonely.

Many islanders are presently travelling so the summer months are quiet, but not for the SLAPS quiz! Thanks to everyone who attended the Yacht Club for the July session. There were interesting questions, lots of fun, and money raised to help us care for animals. During June we received several requests from pet owners who are struggling financially and needed assistance to have their dogs and cats treated by a vet. We are happy to have helped.

The first quiz round was about the former/real names of celebrities. Sample: Give the former name of the boxer Muhammad Ali. (See below for the answer.)

The next round was about coffee, for example: Irish coffee contains which type of alcohol?

We had to include a round about the FIFA World Cup and were impressed when two teams scored full marks. Do you know which country hosted (and won) the first World Cup in 1930?

Our final text round was about Australia. Sample: By what name is the Australian women’s soccer team fondly known?

Congratulations to the winning team, Elephantitus, especially the Scots who were pleased their friends had “dragged” them along. They were delighted to each receive the prize of a bottle of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.

June saw another high turnout for the monthly SLAPS quiz at the Yacht Club. Thanks to everyone who attended; we are happy you had a good time. Best of all, we raised funds to help SLAPS continue its work. We no longer have a facility to house dogs but we are still paying for veterinary care plus feeding strays.

The opening round was about birds. Sample question: Which species of bird can fly backwards? (See below for the answer.)

We then devoted a round to countries that have experienced a name change, for example: Give the immediate former name of Sri Lanka.

The round on the Caribbean included unusual questions such as: Which celebrity founded a rehab centre in Antigua?

Our final text round was on origins. Sample: In which country was the Hawaiian pizza invented?

Quizzlers! It is your time to shine!

SLAPS thanks the supporters who attended the Yacht Club on Tuesday for the May quiz. Even though the snowbirds have migrated back north, there was still an excellent turn-out. Players had a fun evening and we raised funds to help SLAPS continue its work. Last month this included several thousand dollars paid for a dog to have his leg amputated, so he would have mobility with three legs, rather than being permanently hindered by the badly injured leg.

The opening round was about elephants, and Team ‘Who Are We?’had a great start by answering all 10 questions correctly. Sample: What is the name for the female elephant who leads the herd? (See below for the answer.)

A round on food/drink is always popular so that was our next choice. Do you know the main ingredient of the dish Zarzuela?

The May quiz was deferred a week by the Jazz and Arts Festival so we thought it fitting to include a music round, specifically on one-hit wonders. Can you name the artiste who sang Mambo No. 5?

Our final text round was on geography. Sample: What is the smallest country in the world?

‘Who Are We?’ had been in the lead all night but after the final picture round they were matched in points by Team ‘Six on the Beach’ so we went into a tiebreaker.

Congratulations to the winning team, ‘Who Are We?’ who were the closest in guessing the age of the world’s oldest tortoise. They were delighted to each receive the prize of a bottle of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.
