Immaculate Heart College, situated on the Northern tip of Notoue village on the lagoon side of North Tarawa at a place called Taborio, surrounded by sea water on all sides except its northern end that connects it to the rest of Nooto, was opened in September, 1955, as a boarding school for girls. The original staff members were Sr. Thomas), Sr. Margret Grant (Sr. Margaret) and Sr. Denis O’Shea. A few months later Sr. Michelle (Clare Hickey) replaced Sr. Denis O’Shea who went to work full-time as leader of the Sisters of St. Therese, also in Taborio parish. From the first arrival of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Kiribati, they considered the education of girls as of prime importance. Throughout the islands where they were stationed they opened the girls boarded with them. Many of the girls remained with the Sisters until they got married. The girls received the rudiments of an academic education and were trained in the domestic arts – housewifely, needlework and native craft. With very limited resources at their proposal, they produced an almost entirely literate population, strong in the Faith and happy to live their own lives within the confines of their environment. For the more senior girls the Sisters established a school in Butaritari in 1905 for the daughters of mixed parents, Kiribati and European, Kiribati and Chinese and even I-Kiribati parents who could afford some kind of school same island. So from the Sisters’ school to prepare for various vacations. Unfortunately, all the buildings of these two schools were destroyed during World War II. In the reconstruction after the war, Tarawa was considered more central. its good anchorage and deep lagoon provided for ocean-going vessels.
