Tr贸caire is deeply concerned by the UK Government鈥檚 announcement to proceed with gas extraction at Jackdaw in the North Sea.
This comes on the same day that a report by the UN Environment Programme has said that breaching the 1.5掳C warming threshold is now inevitable and urgent action is needed to avoid a disastrous overshoot.
After a record hot summer in the UK where the impacts of the climate crisis continued to be made clear to us all, it is deeply disappointing to see the UK Government commit to more extraction of the fossil fuels which are driving the crisis.
At a time when there should be increasing ambition shown in reducing our emissions and taking bolder action in line with the International Court of Justice鈥檚 (ICJ) landmark Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of States in Respect of Climate Change, the UK Government is furthering our dependence on fossil fuels.
The world is projected to reach between 2.3-2.8掳C of warming by the end of this century, but if the rest of the world had contributed to the same extent as the UK, the world would have already reached 4.2掳C of warming above pre-industrial levels.
At Tr贸caire, we see the impact of the climate crisis on communities across the Global South who are most acutely affected despite having done the least to cause it.
This is another sign that the UK, despite its clear historic responsibilities, current obligations and desire to be seen to show global leadership, lacks the ambition to tackle the climate crisis.
The UN Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights will ultimately ensure that transnational companies do not abuse human rights in the places where they work, and are held accountable if they do.
That's why it's so important we get it right!
This week, some of our Guatemalan partners, such as , have joined us and .global.justice for crucial negotiations in Geneva.
COPAE work with communities that still suffer the social and environmental impacts of the polluting Marlin gold mine while they now face new threats to their rights and livelihoods in the form of hydroelectric projects.
Guatemala is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a human rights defender, with the country experiencing a five-fold increase in killings of land and environmental defenders in 2024.

Make it make sense!
'The Irish draft included a cut of 17% from the Global Europe fund compared to the European Commission鈥檚 original proposal.
Global Europe covers all the EU鈥檚 spending on international development and cooperation.'
In a world facing more conflict than at any time since World War II, the climate crisis, and already devastating aid cuts at the hands of Trump, the UK and many others, the Irish Government pushing this as part of their EU Presidency is shocking, and if it goes ahead, will only increase poverty and the humanitarian need of the world's most vulnerable and at-risk communities.
We march today in solidarity, for justice and for action!
Economic pressure works. That is why the EU must suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The Irish Government has a pivotal role in pushing this forward as they currently hold the EU Presidency. There can be no excuses.
Enough is enough! The people of Palestine are fed up with empty words, we need meaningful action NOW!
