Reflecting on Recent Insights
As we reach the midpoint of the year, it feels like a good opportunity to reflect on some of the themes we have been exploring with clients and through our recent articles.
While each topic has been different, several common themes continue to emerge for growing businesses:
● Strong systems and processes become more important, not less, as a business grows
● Cashflow visibility and forecasting are essential foundations, not nice-to-haves
● Structures around payroll, governance, funding, and reporting should be reviewed regularly rather than left until challenges arise
● Engaging with the right professional support early can make growth significantly more manageable
If you missed any of our recent insights, you can catch up here:

What Should Business Owners Be Thinking About Before Scaling?
Growth creates opportunities, but it also introduces new challenges that many businesses do not encounter until they are already under pressure.
Questions around cashflow, funding, hiring, and business structure can become increasingly complex, often before business owners have had the chance to plan for them.
The decisions made before scaling often have a significant impact on how smoothly that growth can be managed.
In our latest blog, we explore some of the key financial and operational considerations that business owners should review before taking the next step, including:
• Cashflow planning and forecasting
• Funding readiness
• Hiring and team structure
• Systems and internal processes
• Tax planning and business structure
Taking the time to review these areas early can help create a stronger foundation for sustainable growth.

Is Your Business Operationally Ready for Growth?
Growth is often seen as the goal, but scaling successfully brings a very different set of challenges behind the scenes.
One of the most common issues we see is businesses growing faster than the internal structure supporting them. Cashflow comes under pressure, reporting gaps begin to appear, and decisions around hiring, systems, and operational processes become increasingly complex.
Preparing for growth is not just about increasing revenue. It is about making sure the business is operationally and financially ready to scale sustainably.
We will shortly be sharing a practical guide covering areas such as cashflow planning, funding readiness, and some of the key operational and financial considerations business owners should be thinking about before scaling.
In the meantime, if this is something you are currently navigating, the team at McEvoy Craig would be happy to assist.

Payroll Management for Growing Irish SMEs
We recently raised the question of whether to manage payroll in-house or outsource it. As promised, here is the practical guide we put together for Irish business owners working through exactly that decision.
As businesses scale, payroll often becomes far more complex than many owners originally anticipated. What may have started as a straightforward monthly process can gradually evolve into managing multiple contract types, varying hours, Revenue reporting obligations, Enhanced Reporting Requirements (ERR), benefits, expenses, and increased compliance risk.
One of the biggest challenges we see is not necessarily the payroll process itself, but the growing operational risk that comes with relying on outdated processes or a single internal resource as the business expands.
We have put together a practical guide exploring:
● When managing payroll in-house can still work well
● When outsourcing may make more sense
● Common payroll risks for growing businesses
● Key considerations before making a decision

Should You Manage Payroll In-House or Outsource It?
A question that often arises for growing businesses is whether to manage payroll in-house or outsource it.
For many businesses, payroll starts out as something that is easily managed internally with a small team, a straightforward structure, and a process that works well.
However, as businesses grow, payroll can quickly become more complex. More employees, varied contracts, changing Revenue reporting requirements, and the risk of costly errors all begin to increase.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right approach will depend on the size of your team, your internal capability, your growth plans, and how much time and risk you are comfortable managing.
We have been working through this with a number of clients recently and will be sharing a practical guide shortly, covering when it makes sense to keep payroll in-house, when outsourcing may be the better option, and the key considerations before making a decision.
If this is something you are currently reviewing, the team at McEvoy Craig would be happy to assist.

Electric Vehicles: A Practical Guide for Irish Companies
Thinking about providing electric vehicles to employees or directors? It is worth understanding the tax position before making any decisions.
While EVs can offer real advantages from a BIK and capital allowances perspective, the outcome very much depends on how the arrangement is structured.
Some of the key questions to work through:
● Does BIK still arise on electric vehicles?
● How are home charging costs treated?
● What limits apply when claiming capital allowances?
One thing worth knowing right now, the BIK reliefs available on electric vehicles are reducing year on year so timing can make a real difference for companies considering this route.
We have put together a practical guide covering the main tax considerations and what employers need to think through before making any decisions.
Read the full article here:

Electric Vehicles and Tax: What Employers Should Know
We have been receiving more queries recently around electric vehicles for employees, particularly in relation to Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) and capital allowances.
As more companies begin to explore EVs, it is important to note that while electric vehicles can offer tax advantages, the detail and how the vehicle is structured makes a significant difference.
For example:
● Electric vehicles can attract reduced BIK compared to petrol or diesel cars, depending on how they are provided
● Electric vehicles can benefit from lower annual motor tax compared to traditional vehicles
● In certain cases, companies may be able to claim accelerated capital allowances on qualifying expenditure
● The treatment of charging costs (including home charging) can also vary
However, the overall position will depend on factors such as ownership, usage, and how the arrangement is implemented in practice.
We will be sharing a practical guide shortly covering how these rules apply for Irish companies and what to consider before making any decisions.
If electric vehicles are something you are exploring, it may be helpful to review the tax position in advance, the team at McEvoy Craig would be happy to help.
