Babies can have big flavors 🌶️ It’s a myth that babies can’t have big flavors or even spicy food–just start small and follow baby’s lead. As soon as baby is ready for solid food, it’s fine to offer ingredients with some spice, but it’s also important that baby’s first eating experience are generally positive ones, without pain or discomfort. So start by adding a tiny amount of foods like finely chopped chili pepper or chili powder to baby’s meal, taste the food yourself before serving, and consider offering with another cooling food to help balance the heat, like mashed avocado or yogurt. Some babies have a tough time with the big flavor from spicy ingredients, while others love it right away. If your family loves spicy dishes, offering baby those favorite flavors early on can help baby join the family meal sooner rather than later. And if your family doesn’t enjoy spicy food? No need to serve it to your baby. ⭐️ Tip: Cooking with fresh chili peppers? If you want to reduce the heat in the finished dish, remove the white pith and seeds from inside the pepper before adding the pepper to the meal. By age: ➡️ 6 mos+: Let baby taste a scant amount of your food that contains finely chopped fresh chilis or chili powder, but consider holding off on meals that are very spicy. ➡️ 9 mos +: Stir a small amount of finely chopped chili pepper, raw or cooked, or chili powder into food to share with baby, as desired. ➡️ 12 mos +: Offer raw or cooked chili pepper cut into thin strips or semi-circles, or continue to finely chop and stir into the child’s meals. At this age, you can offer a small cup of milk to help balance the heat, if desired. ➡️ 18 mos +: Continue to offer chopped or finely chopped chili pepper and chili powder as desired in family meals. At this age, if you’d like to offer larger sections or whole cooked peppers for biting and tearing practice, such as chile en nogada or stuffed jalapeño, it’s fine to do so.
