A kaleidoscope is an optical instrument consisting of a cylinder with mirrors containing loose, colored objects such as beads or pebbles and bits of glass. As the viewer looks into one end, light entering the other creates a colorful, symmetrical pattern due to repeated reflection.

It all began in the 1970’s with ΥΦΑΔΙ, a modest store in Kallithea, where craftsmanship and quality took center stage. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, the business expanded into wholesale with MIVITA and BOMAISON, introducing premium textiles and home essentials to a wider market.

The Birth of PENNIE and the Next Chapter

As the vision grew, so did the ambition. Inspired by his wife, Vasileios Bothos established PENNIE, a retail chain that became synonymous with comfort, affordability, and home innovation. Under his leadership, the company evolved into a household name, redefining home textiles with an emphasis on quality and design.

The Monk, Leros
Perched high on a hillside spilling down to Agia Marina Beach, The Monk is a stylish one-bedroom guesthouse that has quickly become a local landmark. Opened by Prodromos Toufexis and Ioannis Zacharakis, the property offers sweeping views of the island’s medieval castle and a picturesque string of 18th-century stone windmills.

• The Interior: Renovated by Zacharakis’ firm, A+ Architects, the guesthouse features a sleek, modern refit. The space is decorated with a vibrant mix of contemporary and antique furnishings, complemented by a curated selection of works by Greek artists.
• A Nod to Colorful Traditions: The most distinguishing feature of The Monk is its striking cobalt blue façade. While visitors often ask about the unusual color, it is actually a historical homage. Toufexis notes that the ubiquitous “all-white” Greek island aesthetic only became common midway through the 20th century. Before that, houses were traditionally very colorful—a heritage the owners wanted to preserve and celebrate with this striking property.
